Vidor between sacred history and hill country

Vidor combines impressive cultural sites with routes through vineyards and a landscape that can be explored on foot or by bike. This creates a varied mix of history, religious buildings, views of nature and active days outdoors for your travel planning.

An important cultural site is the Santa Bona Benedictine Abbey. It was founded between 1107 and 1110 by Giovanni Gravone to house relics of Saint Bona, which he had brought from the Holy Land after the First Crusade. The church of the Abbazia Benedettina di Santa Bona preserves a simple layout characteristic of the local Romanesque style, as well as late Gothic decorative elements on its façade. The oratory also contains a 13th-century fresco of Saint Christopher.

The present-day Castello – Monumento ossario di Vidor complex also tells the story of several eras: it was built in 1925 on the site of the former medieval castle and designed by the Venetian architect Brenno Del Giudice. The area can be reached via a path starting from Vidor town centre and lined with the Stations of the Cross. Every year, the “Palio di Vidor” takes place along the road to the ossuary; the event reenacts the numerous attacks on the medieval fortress.

The Chiesetta di San Francesco di Bosco is also part of the local history. The small church is especially cherished by the local population and over the years has become a focal point in the town’s urban development. In the hills of Colbertaldo, vineyard-covered slopes shape the landscape and offer impressive views of nature. The hamlet has an ancient history linked to the Colbertaldo family. They owned a castle built before the 11th century, which was destroyed by the Trevisani in 1200 to prevent Ezzelino III da Romano from using it.

Hiking between the Piave, the abbey and the vineyards

The “Percorso dal Sacro al Prosecco” hiking trail begins in the car park opposite Vidor parish church on Via Piave. It follows the Piave to the Abbazia di Santa Bona and then continues along small roads and paths through the hills and vineyards to Col Castello with the Chiesa Monumento. The route is 9 km long and takes about 3 hours. It therefore provides a clearly defined framework for a day of hiking, combining sacred history and the landscape.

Cycling through the hills

For exploring on two wheels, the “La Via delle Colline” route takes centre stage. It runs through the municipalities of Valdobbiadene, Vidor and Farra di Soligo, connects historical, religious, ecological and food-and-wine attractions with the “La Piave” cycle path, and follows farm roads, paths, as well as paved and gravel roads. The different types of terrain are a useful consideration when you want to divide your holiday days between local history and the rural surroundings.
