Holiday apartment in Tignes: church, art and dairy history

When planning a holiday apartment in Tignes, you can organise your stay around three distinctive themes: the parish church dedicated to Saint Martin, the traces left by painter Pieretto Bianco, and the history of the social dairy. In 1662, Tignes was considered one of the 19 villages or local districts of the former Comune d’Alpago. In Tignes, sacred art, family history, local dairy farming and a regional cycling theme come together.

Between the parish church and sacred art

The parish church of Tignes is dedicated to Saint Martin. The first church can be traced back to the early 1500s. After the previous building was destroyed by an earthquake, the church was rebuilt from 1609 onwards. During the reconstruction, it was separated from the bell tower. The bell tower is a smaller copy of the bell tower in Pieve. The rebuilt church was given a new orientation. After the 1936 earthquake, an apse was added, which still contains the only altar made of worked and painted stone. The church also houses a 17th-century altarpiece depicting the enthroned Madonna between Saint Martin and Saint Anthony the Great. The altarpiece is unsigned and attributed to the Anonimo Veneto. Above the church’s side door there is an equestrian statue of Saint Martin dating from 1800. In the niche opposite stands a stone statue of Saint John Nepomuk. For you as a family, this creates a clearly defined cultural theme combining sacred architectural history and artworks.

Art and memories of Pieretto Bianco

Ferdinando Bortoluzzi, Pieretto Bianco’s father, came from Tignes. During a short holiday in Tignes, Pieretto Bianco created frescoes in the living room and other rooms of the new house belonging to Celeste D’Alpaos. On the façade of the village dairy in Tignes, Pieretto Bianco painted a cow; at the end of the 1970s, the fresco was still visible. In summer 2025, a commemorative plaque was unveiled on Pieretto Bianco’s family home in Tignes. His first painting, „Vecchio suonatore“, was a portrait of Bortolo Schizzi playing the violin and was associated with Tignes.

The social dairy of Tignes

The social dairy of Tignes was founded in 1884 and was one of the first in the Belluno area. In 1932, the dairy had 70 members and around 85 cows; it processed 1,600 hundredweights of milk. In this way, the dairy adds a perspective on cooperative farming and local everyday culture to the history of the village.

Cycling theme and holiday apartment in Tignes

There is another local connection relating to cycling: on the official Valbelluna Bike map, Tignes is connected to the Anello della Val Belluna loop route. The loop route broadens the holiday themes with a regional cycling perspective, while the church, art and dairy represent opportunities to explore cultural and everyday history. If you are planning a holiday apartment in Tignes, you can give these focal points different weight depending on whether you want to include shared cultural days, biographical discoveries, local economic history or the cycling theme in your trip. This allows the stay to be adapted to different interests without reducing Tignes to just one aspect.
