Holiday apartment in Cibiana di Cadore: Murals, Monte Rite and Crafts
A holiday apartment in Cibiana di Cadore takes you to a place that combines murals, museums, traditional crafts and mountain trails. Around 60 murals, Monte Rite and winter cross-country skiing offer different focuses for your stay: you can discover culture, assess a mountain route or choose a sporting season.
Murals, museums and crafts
The murals of Cibiana can be visited on foot and depict the history of the village. Campo Base is Reinhold Messner’s second museum in Cibiana di Cadore, after the museum on Monte Rite. It was conceived as a starting point for an intellectual ascent through Cibiana’s art and culture, as well as through the history of mountaineering.
The Museo del Ferro e della Chiave presents mining, iron processing and objects made of iron on two floors. Bilingual Italian-English panels explain the technical development of processing metal into everyday objects. The museum is located near the Ufficio delle Miniere in the district of Cibiana di Sotto. The development of the Rite valley was closely connected with iron craftsmanship; mines were already active there in 1420. From this iron processing, Cibiana developed a distinctive craft for making keys. In Cibiana, the famous “scarpete”—slippers made of cord and velvet—are also produced entirely by hand by women.
The Messner Mountain Museum preserves fossils that document the early formation of dolomite rock, including Claraia shell fossils from 250 million years ago and fossil cycads from 240 million years ago. The thematic scope thus ranges from local history and crafts to the history of the Earth.
Monte Rite and trails through the mountain landscape
Monte Rite is located in the immediate vicinity of Cibiana. Fortezza Cadore-Maè was built on Monte Rite (2,181 m) between 1912 and 1914; its present form is due to its strategic importance during the two world wars. Sasso dei Corvi, Monte Sassolungo di Cibiana and Col Vida are also located in the immediate vicinity of Cibiana.
From Cibiana, the trail to Monte Rite follows CAI Trail 479, also known as the Sentiero del Col d’Orlando. The trail is considered wide and well marked. The summit of Monte Rite can be reached via natural trails through the forest and an ascent of approximately 7 km. The Alta Via No. 3 of the Dolomites also crosses Monte Rite.
