The settlement can be traced back to the Orvieto cadastre of 1292, where it was designated the “Villa” of San Severo. The place name Torre San Severo is first mentioned in a document from 1356, when the fief passed to the Abbey of Saints Severo and Martirio. In the 15th century, Torre San Severo was a fortified settlement with a tower. At the end of the 15th century, the tower lost this function and became an outpost of the same abbey. In 1554, Cardinal Girolamo Simoncelli received the palazzo from the Apostolic Camera in order to convert it into a summer residence. A parish was established in the centre of the village in 1614.

Between 1568 and 1570, Cesare Nebbia worked with Muziano on decorating the residence of Cardinal Girolamo Simoncelli in Torre Sansevero. The fresco cycle “Storie di Minerva” is located in the Salone della Caminata of Palazzo Simoncelli. Cesare Nebbia also decorated the two rooms dedicated to Moses and Joseph in Palazzo Simoncelli with frescoes. The villa in Torre San Severo was created by converting a late-medieval abbey complex of the same name. The Abbey of Saints Severo and Martirio is a large medieval complex made of tuff, with a massive twelve-sided bell tower; it is set amid greenery on the southeastern slopes of the Orvieto rock, near the route of the ancient Teutonic Way.

Festival and museum traces

The second edition of the “InFrazioni” festival took place in Torre San Severo from 10 to 12 July 2026. The programme included concerts, performances, film screenings, walks, tastings, readings and wellness activities. At the Museo Claudio Faina in Orvieto, the sarcophagus of Torre San Severo displays carved scenes inspired by Greek mythology and characterised by a funerary nature.
