Holiday apartment in Terni: Roman monuments, museums and La Passeggiata

The Roman Amphitheatre is Terni’s most imposing preserved Roman monument. The city brings together ancient traces, medieval buildings, museums and contemporary art. In addition, there are public gardens, a Franciscan pilgrimage trail and regional routes through the province of Terni.

Culture and history

The Church of San Salvatore is one of Terni’s oldest religious buildings; its origins date back to the early Middle Ages. The city gates also tell the story of the medieval city: Porta Sant’Angelo was the western exit of the medieval city of Terni, while the Via Flaminia from Terni towards Spoleto ran through Porta Spoletina.

Terni Cathedral, Santa Maria Assunta, has its present appearance following renovations carried out between the 16th and 17th centuries. Its original core was built at the burial site of Bishop Sant’Anastasio; his foundations are visible beneath a glass floor. The Basilica of San Valentino stands on the site of an ancient Christian cemetery, one of the most significant early Christian necropolises in Umbria.

Museums and art

The Claudia Giontella Archaeological Museum is divided into a pre-Roman and a Roman section and tells the history of Interamna Nahars. The Aurelio De Felice Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art combines the historic municipal art gallery, previously housed in the Palazzo Gazzoli, with a new section for contemporary art.

The Paleolab is a fossil museum housed in an impressive deconsecrated 13th-century church and can only be visited by reservation. Arnaldo Pomodoro’s Lancia di Luce is a cast-steel sculpture; it is 30 metres high and weighs 90 tonnes. CAOS is located on the River Nera and was created by repurposing a disused industrial site.

Nature and trails

The La Passeggiata public gardens cover just under 4 hectares and lie between the walls of the ancient Roman city and Terni’s historic centre. Their botanical value is partly due to species included in Italy’s list of monumental trees.

The Cammino dei Protomartiri Francescani begins in Terni and honours the Franciscan Protomartyrs. Another landscape experience is provided by boat trips on Lake Piediluco, which depart from several boarding points along the lakeside beaches.

Archaeology and regional landscape

In the Carsulae Archaeological Park, the remains of the most important public, civic and religious monuments of the ancient centre can be seen. Not all areas are easily accessible; the visitor centre is fully accessible to people with disabilities.

The Strada dei Vini Etrusco Romana crosses the province of Terni through areas that were formerly Etruscan and Roman. It passes through a region of art cities and typical Umbrian landscapes and includes renowned wineries producing DOC and IGT wines from Umbria.
