Discover Guadamello: Historic Center, Castle and Hiking Trails

Guadamello combines a clearly recognizable historic center with church art, medieval traces and hiking trails through the Narnese landscape. The village belongs to Narni as a “Monument Fraction”; its historic center remains clearly recognizable in its boundaries, street layout and urban fabric. Historic Center and Notable Buildings

The historic center preserves its original layout and is separated from the contemporary development. Within the center, paths paved with pebbles and bricks run through the streets. One of the notable buildings is the so-called Palazzo of Guadamello: a unified structure incorporating three large early medieval towers.

The history of the village reaches far back. The existence of the Castrum Gaitamelli is first documented in the Regesto Farfense. For the year 1036, it mentions a donation by Abbot Pietro di Sant’Angelo in Massa to Farfa Abbey. On Sasso Freddo hill, some finds also indicate a place of worship and burial dating from the end of the Bronze Age.

Santa Maria Annunziata and Madonna del Monte

In the church of Santa Maria Annunziata, two Roman capitals and other reused materials from the Roman period can be seen from the entrance. The baptismal font is a local craftwork from the mid-17th century. Its dating is supported by the carved coat of arms of Bishop Raimondo Castelli on the basin.

Frescoes from the 16th and 17th centuries have also been preserved. Some of the 17th-century frescoes are possibly attributed to the Narnese painter Carlo Federico Benincasa. In the Middle Ages, Santa Maria Annunziata was a destination for pilgrims traveling from southern Italy and Rome to Loreto and Assisi. Another religious site is the Madonna del Monte chapel, which is also dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abate and Sant’Isidoro Agricoltore. The residents of Guadamello built it in 1600 following a miraculous event.

Three Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

For planning active days, the three trails offer clearly distinguishable key figures. Sentiero 649 Ocriculum–Guadamello is 8 km long and has 360 m of ascent. It begins at the Ocriculum Archaeological Area, passes through San Vito and ends in Guadamello.

Sentiero 657 Guadamello–Intersezione percorso 658 is 5.5 km long. It begins in Guadamello, passes through the Tiber Valley to Lago di San Liberato and then climbs to the junction with Sentiero 658. Sentiero 658 Guadamello–Santa Pudenziana is 8.6 km long, has 130 m of ascent, also begins in Guadamello, passes through the Narnese landscape and ends at the Santa Pudenziana complex. Guadamello Castle and the Lakeside Landscape

Guadamello Castle stands on a rocky promontory above Lago di San Liberato and its nature reserve. The reservoir forms a wetland ecosystem with aquatic and migratory wildlife and is overlooked by Guadamello Castle. Historical architecture, a body of water and a diverse landscape thus come together at the same destination.

The former castle of Guadamello is visited on foot; cars are parked outside the castle walls. For the visit, parking near the main entrance is recommended. Torre di Bufone and La Contesa delle Torri

The nearby Torre di Bufone is the only surviving structure of the former Castel di Bufone and is 19 meters high. It can be reached via the road from Visciano; after parking nearby, continue uphill on foot.

La Contesa delle Torri offers another historical perspective. The event is a historical and cultural re-enactment of the 14th century, takes place over several days in September and has San Vito and Guadamello as its venues. In this way, the historic center, religious buildings, individual towers, hiking trails and the landscape around Lago di San Liberato combine to offer different ways of discovering Guadamello.
