Montefranco: a place between valley views and history

Monte Moro offers a viewpoint overlooking the Fosso Lavatore valley on the northern slope towards the Via Flaminia. The Monte Moro archaeological site comprises the remains of a Roman sanctuary and two associated cisterns. Montefranco’s historical landmarks also include the churches of Santa Maria Assunta, Madonna del Carmine and San Bernardino, as well as the Porta Franca.

Tradition throughout the year

The Rievocazione del Passaggio di San Bernardino da Siena has taken place every year in Montefranco since 1986, during the third week of May. In the historic centre, the reenactment portrays medieval life with recreated craft workshops and performances.

Churches with different historical layers

The church of Santa Maria Assunta has medieval origins, was expanded to three naves in the 15th century and houses an intricately carved baptismal font. The church of Madonna del Carmine in Montefranco preserves 17th-century frescoes from the Umbrian school, as well as a depiction of the Assumption dating from the 16th century. The church of San Bernardino was built in 1454 over an old Benedictine oratory and preserves frescoes attributed to Orlando Merlini.

Porta Franca and Bufone Castle

Porta Franca survives as one of Montefranco’s historic gates, facing south towards Arrone, and once served as a passage for duty-free goods. The outer walls of the former Bufone Castle have been preserved. Both structures retain historical traces of the town, but differ in their former functions and in what has survived.

Nera River Park and outdoor activities

The municipal area of Montefranco lies within Nera River Park. Within Nera River Park, rafting is possible in the Montefranco area. Caving excursions are also among the outdoor activities offered in the municipal area. Montefranco also offers opportunities for sport climbing and free climbing on equipped natural and artificial rock faces. The types of activity therefore differ according to both setting and nature: Nera River Park, cave, or natural or artificial rock face.

Historic trails and the Via del Ferro

The route from Montefranco to Monte Moro is considered a discovery route for the Via del Ferro. This old trail once connected Monteleone di Spoleto with Scheggino in the Nera Valley. The route thus leads from a specific point of reference in Montefranco to a historic route that extends beyond the municipal area.

Summer food festival

The Sagra della Pizza sotto lu foco is a summer food festival in Montefranco. It is scheduled from 19 July to 28 July and from 1 August to 4 August.
