Trails and stops around Montecastrilli
Cammino, Via Amerina and D7
The Cammino delle Panchine Giganti is suitable for mountain bike tours and walks. The Antica Via Amerina passes through the Montecastrilli area. The Amerino area in Umbria also includes the regional D7 hiking area, which is suitable for trekking on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The Antica Via Amerina and D7 broaden the choice of trails beyond the Cammino. When planning a day in Montecastrilli, these routes differ above all in their modes of travel: the Cammino is associated with mountain bike tours and walks, while D7 refers to trekking on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.
Big Benches and Castel dell’Aquila
The Big Bench Route includes six Big Benches representing Montecastrilli, Casteltodino, Farnetta, Collesecco, Castel dell’Aquila and Quadrelli. Castel dell’Aquila is also the place where the Museum of Peasant Culture is located. The place name therefore belongs both to the stops on the route and to the location of the museum.
Culture: gates, churches and peasant history
San Nicolò and Santa Chiara
The Church of San Nicolò is the parish church of Montecastrilli and has six chapels, three of which are designed in the Baroque style. The Church of Santa Chiara is attached to the convent of the Poor Clares. Their construction dates differ: San Nicolò was built in the 10th to 11th century, while Santa Chiara dates from the 17th century.
Porta Amerina and Medieval Gate
Other tangible testimonies include the Porta Amerina and the Medieval Gate. The Porta Amerina is characterized by two arches. The Medieval Gate is a remnant of Montecastrilli’s ancient fortification complex. The two gates therefore differ in their respective architectural features.
Museum of Peasant Culture
In Castel dell’Aquila, the Museum of Peasant Culture permanently displays agricultural equipment and tools. Here, peasant history has its own local connection alongside the churches and gates.
Regional cuisine and rural character
Agricollina and agricultural products
An exhibition of historic tractors has accompanied Agricollina since 1988. Agricollina’s Salone dei Sapori comprises around 20 stands featuring typical agricultural and food products. At Agricollina, historic agricultural machinery and regional agricultural and food products are presented in two different areas of the event.
Olive oil, wine, mushrooms and truffles
Mushrooms and truffles are traditionally used to prepare, refine and flavor various typical dishes of the local cuisine. Olive oil and wine are part of local production in Montecastrilli, while mushrooms and truffles serve various functions in traditional cuisine.
