Holiday apartment in Castel Viscardo between Cotto and cultural heritage

The production of handmade bricks in Castel Viscardo dates back to the 16th century; the oldest reference to a brickworks dates from 1541. Cotto production also continues to this day: modern technologies are used while traditional manufacturing methods are preserved. MUSEC is housed in a former well house and collects, preserves, and presents the cultural and historical heritage of Castel Viscardo relating to Cotto and brickmaking.

At MUSEC, explanatory panels and installations document episodes from the history of the brickworks. Reproductions of local ceramics, produced since the 16th century, are also displayed. Upon request, MUSEC organizes workshops on working with clay for adults and children.

Archaeological traces and medieval buildings

The Caldane Necropolis dates largely from the second half of the 6th century BC. The tombs contained painted ceramics from Orvieto, Bucchero, and metal objects, including an Etruscan bronze mirror engraved with mythological depictions. The necropolis is located in the Parco Archeologico e Ambientale dell'Orvietano, in a wooded area northwest of Castel Viscardo in the valley of the Paglia River.

In the town itself stands the medieval Castello dei duchi di Montevecchio, also known as Castello di Madonna. Its architectural features include an irregular polygonal layout, a wide moat, a bridge, a Baroque entrance, and massive perimeter walls made of local stone. The castle was central to the development of Castel Viscardo and, together with its towers and the Torretta di Vitiano, served for a long time as a lookout point for the defense of Orvieto and the upper and middle Valle del Paglia. The Church of Maria SS. Annunziata dates from 1682; its nave contains four chapels with paintings by Carlo Maratta, Wernle, and Bernabei of Perugia.

Landscape, festivals, and regional delicacies

The municipal territory of Castel Viscardo is included in the STINA area. The local study area includes the Paglia Valley, the Caldane archaeological zone, and the Faggeta natural area. The Allerona–Castel Viscardo railway station is also located in the hamlet of Pianlungo.

Traditions also shape the character of the town. The Sagra della Cannelletta originated in August 1966; its name comes from the Cannelletta, a tap on a wine barrel that allows its contents to be poured. The event also continues the tradition of an opening procession in traditional dress. Another inherited practice is the Pasquarella: in Castel Viscardo, it is performed and sung in the town's streets and courtyards exclusively on the night of the Feast of the Epiphany.

Local olive varieties include Leccino, Muragliolo, and Frantoio; extra virgin olive oil is produced from them. Several wineries in the Castel Viscardo area provide further culinary orientation. In Monterubiaglio, there is also a family cellar carved into tuff, featuring high-relief sculptures depicting the individual stages of winemaking.

To continue exploring the surrounding area, from Castel Viscardo you can also visit Fabro Scalo, Otricoli, Rotecastello, Montecchio, San Gemini, Pornello, Castel Giorgio and Cecalocco.
