Alviano is one of the 14 stages of the 118-kilometre circular Cammino della Pietra Bianca through the Monti Amerini and the Tevere river area. The route can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or with a Joëlette. In the village, the permanent Sentiero dell’Unicorno begins in the oldest part of Alviano, in the Giardini del Sole. The art trail comprises eight stations and leads to the Castello. Another option is the approximately 14-kilometre circular itinerary via Parco Pietraia, Pianali, Grotta di Rancacani and Eremo San Brunone. It runs through woodland between Alviano and Lugnano in Teverina. The different lengths and themes help you organise your days according to the balance you want between distance, art trail and landscape.

Rocca, church and rural heritage

The Rocca di Alviano was built in 1495 as a square baronial residence with corner towers and defensive structures. The restored Rocca stands at the entrance to the village whose foundation it prompted. The castle’s cellars house the Museo della Civiltà Contadina. It preserves the rural heritage of this area through tools and objects from agriculture, the household and crafts. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta also offers an introduction to Alviano’s history: it dates from the 15th century and houses a panel by Niccolò Alunno depicting the Assumption of Mary surrounded by glorifying angels. The Casette di Creta are another distinctive architectural legacy: 19th-century residential buildings in the area of Alviano occupied by the Calanchi. They were built from simple materials found locally.

A tradition on 5 January

The tradition of La Vecchiarella, revived in Alviano, takes place every year in the afternoon or evening of 5 January. Singers go from house to house and collect donations for the souls in purgatory.
