Location between Valley and Lake

Vaiano is located in the hills between the Valdichiana Valley and Lake Trasimeno. At 372 meters above sea level, Vaiano is the highest-altitude hamlet in the municipality of Castiglione del Lago. The area forms a panoramic terrace overlooking the Valdichiana Valley and Lake Trasimeno. Its elevated position connects the valley and the lake into a defining landscape of Vaiano.

Roman Traces and Medieval History

The Villa Gioiella-Vaiano archaeological site is a Roman villa between the present-day settlements of Gioiella and Vaiano. Its history goes back a long way: it was first settled in the 2nd century BC and was inhabited at least until the end of the 3rd century AD. Another historic site is the Tomb of Paradiso near Vaiano. It was discovered in 1908 and restored in the 1970s. The Tomb of Paradiso dates from the 2nd century BC and has a travertine door leading to the burial chamber. The travertine door forms the entrance to the burial chamber.

The inscriptions on the lids of the two ash urns in the Tomb of Paradiso also tell of its past. They refer to members of the Velsi Prute family, which, according to more recent interpretations, was a branch of the influential Velsi family from Chiusi. As early as the Late Middle Ages, the ridge on which Vaiano stands served as a route between Chiusi and Cortona. Under Lombard rule, Vaiano also had a “curtis munita”, meaning a fortified estate.

Church, Feast Day and Local Life

The parish of Vaiano remains dedicated to Sant’Egidio Abate. This name is also associated with the Fiera di Sant’Egidio, which has taken place in Vaiano for centuries on September 1. The name Sant’Egidio Abate thus appears both in religious life and in the local festival calendar.

The landscape around Vaiano includes restored farmhouses that are now used as agriturismi. At Agricola Bittarelli, guided walks through the fields are offered as part of the Bittarelli Experience.
