Culture and Historic Sites

A special point of interest is the Museo della Canapa, which opened in 2008. It documents the complete cycle of hemp processing: from cultivation through water retting and drying to breaking and carding. The sequence thus extends from the agricultural starting point to the craft processes that prepare the material for further processing.

The churches also preserve notable evidence of the town’s history. The bell tower of the Chiesa di Sant’Anatolia di Narco incorporates one of the towers of the medieval castle complex. The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie contains an original fresco attributed to the Maestro di Eggi. The Feast of the Madonna delle Grazie takes place there on 22 August. Castel San Felice, a hamlet of Sant’Anatolia di Narco, is also home to the Abbey of Santi Felice e Mauro, regarded as one of Umbria’s most important Romanesque churches. The churches therefore focus attention both on architectural traces of medieval fortification and on a single surviving work of art.

The Nera Landscape and Mountain World

The Nera River has a particularly strong influence on the municipal area of Sant’Anatolia di Narco. A characteristic view opens up in Castel San Felice: from the western gate, there is a view of the abbey below and the recently restored bridge over the Nera River. Historic architecture and the river landscape are directly perceptible here as interconnected elements, while the western gate provides a fixed reference point for this view.

Above 900 metres, tall oak and beech forests grow on the Coscerno and Eremita mountains. The extensive high-altitude pastures extend beyond 1,500 metres, and golden eagles live there permanently. The landscape therefore ranges from wooded mountain slopes to open high-altitude areas. For those interested in nature, the high-altitude pastures and the resident golden eagle are concrete features of the mountain environment alongside the forested areas.

Greenway del Nera and Regional Cuisine

The section of the Greenway del Nera begins near the village of Palombara, runs towards Scheggino and climbs uphill along the medieval walls of Sant’Anatolia di Narco. It offers impressive landscape views, especially on the ascent. For planning a day trip, the route is therefore easy to follow: it starts at Palombara, heads towards Scheggino and includes the climb along the walls as a defining feature of this section. Those who choose this section of the route can combine the views with the uphill course.

The municipality of Sant’Anatolia di Narco is also home to a globally important business specialising in the preservation and processing of truffles. Truffle processing adds a distinct connection to regional cuisine alongside the historic buildings, river landscape and mountain environment.
