Pian di Marte combines open landscapes with historical traces. Part of the Boschi di Pischiello - Torre Civitella protected area faces Pian di Marte and has a northeast orientation. North of Passignano, the area protects a sandstone hill range at elevations between 300 and 730 metres. It includes thermophilic and thermo-xerophilic woodland and pasture plant communities that are characteristic of western Umbria. The northeast orientation and elevation of the hill range give the natural area of Pian di Marte a distinctive profile.

The Azienda Agricola Moretti also shapes the landscape of the area. It extends over approximately 400 hectares of forests, tree-covered pastures and farmland in hilly terrain and on the plain. The AATV "Castel Rigone" hunting estate is associated with the Azienda. It covers 270 hectares of irrigated plain, wetlands on the valley floor, cultivated land and hilly pastures. Pian di Marte therefore presents itself as a landscape of forests, agriculture, pastures and areas with diverse forms.

Cycling tours and paths around Pian di Marte

The paths offer their own highlights for planning your trip. The Le 4 Cime cycling tour reaches Pian di Marte via a five-kilometre ascent that passes through Crocicchie. It connects the Gosparini, Lisciano-Crocicchie and Trecine climbs with Magione Montecolognola as the fourth climb. When hiking, the path leads after several hairpin bends to Torre di Fiume at an elevation of 424 metres. Another path runs along the wooded slope and separates it from the fields and pastures of Pian di Marte.

Historical traces around Pian di Marte

The Church of San Cristoforo stands on the summit of Poggio and overlooks the plain of Pian di Marte. Its first documented mention dates from 1136. In local tradition, the Fonte di Annibale, also known as Fonte d'argento, is one of the historical markers of Pian di Marte. In local tradition, the Casa delle vedove is associated with the wives of fallen legionaries. Local historical traditions also connect Pian di Marte with Hannibal's pursuit of Roman survivors after the Battle of Lake Trasimene.
