Lippiano combines local history with paths through a chestnut forest and views of Lago di Montedoglio and the upper Tiber Valley. In the village, the Castello di Lippiano, a district once used as a ghetto, two churches and several marked hiking routes come together.

Castle, Bastion and Ghetto in the Village Landscape

The Castello di Lippiano was once a residence of the Bourbon del Monte family. The building is privately owned and is not normally open to visitors. At the foot of the Castello di Lippiano, a district used as a ghetto developed between the 15th and 19th centuries.

At Piazza Umberto I, the old circular bastion of the Castello di Lippiano, with its circular ground plan, can be viewed from the outside. An entrance arch marked with a plaque leads to Lippiano’s ancient Jewish ghetto.

Churches and Historical Traces

The Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie was built in 1717 by Marchese Francesco. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is a neo-Gothic church and was rebuilt after the 1917 earthquake.

The Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie is privately owned and is generally not open to visitors. Near the former church in Lippiano, which has since been deconsecrated, two additional hiking trails intersect.

For those interested in culture, the village landscape brings together an externally visible circular bastion, a marked entrance to the ghetto and churches with historical dates.

Hiking Trails for Different Time Frames

The Anello di Citerna–Monterchi–Lippiano loop trail, classified as E, is 16 km long; the stated walking time is 5 hours and 30 minutes. For day planning, this walking time provides the timeframe; breaks and stays at points along the route are additional.

The two types of routes therefore set different timeframes for planning: the 16 kilometres of the loop trail contrast with a multi-day connection via the Sentiero dei Laghi.

The Sentiero 152 connects Lippiano with the Sentiero 155 and runs through a forest with centuries-old chestnut trees. From this trail, the view extends to Lago di Montedoglio and across the upper Tiber Valley.

The Sentiero 152 also offers the opportunity to visit the Marzano area.

From the summit of Monte Paiaiolo, the view extends in all directions. This panoramic view complements the lake and valley views along the Sentiero 152 with an additional perspective of Lippiano.

The Sentiero 153 SL is part of the multi-day Sentiero dei Laghi, which connects Lago Trasimeno with Lago di Montedoglio. It leads to Lippiano at an elevation of 424 metres. At the trail junction near Lippiano, there is a connection to the A8 loop trail (Citerna–Monterchi–Lippiano).
