Holiday apartment in Izzalini: Castles, Churches and Village Culture

A trip to Izzalini combines historic buildings, ecclesiastical architecture, and local events and culinary culture. At the center is Castello di Izzalini, which is designated as a protected cultural heritage site. It preserves an entrance arch topped by a bell tower. The protection status applies to the Castello itself; the entrance arch and bell tower belong to the same castle complex. The bell tower rises above the entrance arch as a clearly recognizable architectural feature of the village.

Castles and Churches as Cultural Highlights

The Torre Baldo fortress was built in 1458. In the forests of Torre Baldo, ruins attest to the existence of a 13th-century castle. According to tradition, it was built by Ilione Landone and was therefore given the name Castrum Ilionis. The year 1458 refers to the Torre Baldo fortress, while the earlier date refers to the castle in the forests. Castrum Ilionis thus remains associated with the traditional castle and its founding history involving Ilione Landone. The ruins are therefore located in the forests of Torre Baldo and refer to the older castle, not to the dated fortress construction.

The former parish church of San Michele Arcangelo was located within Castello di Izzalini and had three altars dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo, the Madonna del Rosario, and San Pietro Martire. The present-day parish church of San Michele Arcangelo was built outside the castle walls between 1930 and 1933. It features a Neo-Romanesque design with a single-nave layout. The same church name therefore refers both to the former church inside the Castello and to the later building outside the castle walls. The same name has been retained throughout both construction phases. The three altars and their dedications are documented for the former church; the present building is characterized by its location outside the castle walls and its Neo-Romanesque, single-nave design.

Castello Piemozzo is also well preserved. In the case of Castello Piemozzo, the focus is therefore on its state of preservation, while Torre Baldo is associated with a construction date and forest ruins linked to an older castle.

Film, Village Square and Traditional Dishes

At screenings in the “All'Ombra del Castello” series, tastings of traditional dishes took place beforehand. During the 17th edition of the series, four films were shown in an event area set up for the summer in the village square by the castle. The sequence, with the tasting before the screening, is just as much a part of the event as the specific venue by the castle. The title “All'Ombra del Castello” explicitly references the Castello and connects the event name with the area's historical context. The culinary tasting takes place at the beginning of the program, followed by the four films on the summer event space.
