Holiday apartment in Grotti: Castle, festivals and rocky landscape

Grotti lies above and below the road to Spoleto and is divided into four interconnected settlements: Castello, Monteverde, San Pietro and Burghittacciu. The road to Spoleto forms the reference line between the upper and lower parts of the settlement.

Castle remains and Chiesa di San Pietro

Above the present-day settlement of Grotti are the remains of a medieval castle. The medieval castle remains are dominated by the La Torre fortification. The historical focus therefore remains tied to a specific fortification above the present-day settlement.

The Chiesa di San Pietro dates back to the 14th century and was built as a devotional chapel outside the castle walls, along the public road. Its sacred significance is complemented by the bell and the traditional account of its foundation. According to tradition, a woman threw her gold into the melting furnace of the Campana della Madonna delle Scentelle. The bell was intended for the small rural church, and the offering was made in gratitude for a grace received. The chapel is therefore part of Grotti’s historic townscape.

Music and festivals throughout the year

An organ concert takes place every year in June at the Chiesa di San Pietro, organized by Ente Rocca di Spoleto. The festival of Sant’Antonio Abate is also celebrated there on a Sunday after 17 January. The festival of San Pietro Apostolo takes place on 29 June. The concert month of June therefore coincides with the feast day of San Pietro Apostolo, while Sant’Antonio Abate is celebrated on a Sunday after 17 January. Thus, the musical event and the religious celebrations take place at different points in the annual cycle.

Caves, gorges and mountains in the surrounding area

The local landscape of Grotti is characterized by caves, rocky gorges and rocky peaks. Monte Cannaiola, Monte Coscerno, Monte Galloro and Monte Felcito are located in the surrounding area. In addition to the caves, gorges and rocky peaks, four mountains also shape the landscape around Grotti. The rock formations and mountains form a scenic counterpoint to the castle and church.
