Holiday apartment in Cortaccione: culture, trails and landscape

Cortaccione between Roman heritage and distinctive structures

Cortaccione combines archaeological heritage, structures, trails and landscape. The protected archaeological site of Cortaccione-San Beroide includes a 39 x 37 metre Roman funerary enclosure. At the Ponte del Cortaccione, a viaduct spans the Cortaccione River; it has four arches and is 70 metres high. For those interested in culture, Cortaccione offers a range extending from a Roman funerary enclosure to a viaduct over the Cortaccione River.

Walking trail and former railway line

The Giro dei Condotti is an approximately 1-kilometre-long, almost level walking trail from the Fortilizio dei Mulini to the Ponte Sanguineto and partly follows the course of the aqueducts to the Ponte delle Torri. At the Ponte del Cortaccione, the municipality of Spoleto has installed a counting device to record bicycle and pedestrian traffic on the Spoleto–Norcia route. The section of the former Spoleto–Norcia railway line from Spoleto to Sant'Anatolia di Narco is 23.5 kilometres long and classified as moderately difficult. The Giro dei Condotti therefore represents a short, almost level trail; the former railway section is longer and classified as moderately difficult.

Structures, tunnels and vegetation

The former Spoleto–Norcia railway line passes tunnels and viaducts and then reaches the large open area behind the Ponte del Cortaccione. After the former Cortaccione halt, there is a short, unlined tunnel, followed by a second short, also unlined tunnel, before the route continues to climb towards Matrignano. Its first section climbs the slopes of Licina and is partly surrounded by olive groves and original evergreen vegetation such as holm oaks and Aleppo pines.

The history of water management around the Ponte delle Torri

The history of water conveyance also extends far beyond individual structures. According to one view, the Ponte delle Torri was built between the 13th and 14th centuries on an older Roman aqueduct that probably carried water from the springs of Cortaccione to Spoleto. For centuries, older conduits from the Fosso di Cortaccione in the north and from Patrico in the south carried water into the city of Spoleto via the Ponte delle Torri. The Ponte delle Torri is therefore connected with an older Roman aqueduct as well as with conduits from Cortaccione and Patrico.
