Azzano lies 1.5 kilometres west of the Ponte di Azzano (Marroggia) on the Spoleto–Assisi cycle route. Fortified history and old churches

The former Castello di Azzano stood directly beside a Roman secondary road that led from Spoleto across the plain of the Torrente Marroggia to Trevi. Its square layout is considered typical of the plain. A high ring wall surrounds a small cluster of houses dating from the 15th to the 16th century, arranged around a small central square.

Azzano was initially an open settlement and was fortified with walls towards the end of the 14th century, possibly in 1378. The village belonged to the system of fortified settlements in the Spoletan plain that emerged after the Albornoz restoration. This development gives the local history a clear medieval focus.

The religious history includes the old Romanesque Chiesa di San Lorenzo. It probably dates from the 11th century and has been documented as property of Bovara Abbey since 1178. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Soccorso is also known as Madonna del Soccorso and was built between the 11th and 12th centuries in Azzano, a hamlet of Spoleto. The façade and interior were altered in the 17th century; the church probably received its present dedication at that time.

Torre di Azzano and the mills

The medieval Torre di Azzano was built by the people of Spoleto in 1400 to defend the municipal boundaries and was established as a fortified outpost facing the Castello di Beroide. The complex still contains two separate mill installations: a grain mill with grain-grinding machinery and an oil mill. Water from a diversion channel powers both installations, using two Pelton-type hydraulic turbines. The two mills have been documented since the 18th century.

Christmas traditions and specialities

For 2025, the second edition of the “Mercatini di Natale di Azzano” was part of the City of Spoleto’s Christmas programme. From 6 to 8 December 2025, it was dedicated to Christmas traditions, handicrafts and local specialities. Stalls offering vin brulé, sweets and typical Umbrian specialities were planned. “Arrivano i mercanti di Azzano” is also associated with a Christmas market featuring Christmas music and small-scale catering organised by the Pro Loco di Azzano.
