Momigno combines a distinctive village character with medieval traces, a forested landscape and a culinary tradition in which the chestnut plays a dual role.
Momigno between rural history, a medieval village character and its former walled settlement
Momigno was mentioned in 1064 as a small rural community. In the 13th century, the settlement became a rural municipality. Later, Momigno became a walled settlement. No traces of the fortifications remain today, apart from the distinctive village character. The Church of San Donato preserves parts of its medieval perimeter walls.
San Donato, the Parco della Rimembranza and Momigno’s monuments
The Parco della Rimembranza di Momigno is considered one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in the province of Pistoia. It is located on a terrace on the left side of the parish church of San Donato and at the highest point of the historic settlement. This location brings the church, park and village character together at a clearly identifiable point. In the park, on Via Fagno next to the church, stands the Monumento ai Caduti di Momigno. It is dedicated to the fallen of Momigno from the First World War. The monument to Anchise, Gerino and Ottavio Baldi also stands in the garden next to San Donato. The two monuments emphasize different aspects of history: one commemorates the fallen of the village, while the other bears the names of Anchise, Gerino and Ottavio Baldi.
Chestnut forests, gentle slopes with vineyards and olive groves, and the Anello 2 circular trail
In the area of Marliana, the landscape is largely covered by dense chestnut forests. Between them, the hills often open into gentle slopes with vineyards and olive groves. A particularly striking landscape perspective can be found in the area along the Margine di Momigno–Panicagliora road and the adjoining strip of land. According to the official classification, this landscape area is of considerable public importance. Anyone wishing to explore the surrounding area on foot will find a clearly described route in the Anello 2 – Sentiero della pietra circular trail. The trail is 20.6 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 793 metres. The distance and elevation gain make this a tour for which sufficient time and suitable daily planning should be allowed.
Necci made from chestnut flour and handmade stone testi
Necci, flat pancakes made from chestnut flour, are part of the local identity. The chestnut therefore shapes not only large parts of the landscape but also appears as a tangible ingredient in the cuisine. An artisan makes the stone testi used to prepare necci by hand.
