Stazzema is strategically located, overlooking the entire Mulina Valley. Surrounded by the Apuan Alps, it is the only completely mountainous town in this part of Tuscany and enjoys a panoramic position overlooking its numerous hamlets. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Stazzema, you can use it as a base for a stay that combines landscapes with exploring the town and its surroundings.
Holiday apartment in Stazzema: mountains, trails and history
In the historic centre, the Torre dell’Orologio dates from 1739. The history of the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta goes back even further: the first document concerning the parish church held in the archiepiscopal archives of Lucca is dated 871. In 1255, the nobles of Versilia signed an alliance called the “Lega di Stazzema” in this parish church.
The Torre dell’Argentiera is also one of the defensive structures still visible in Stazzema’s historic silver-mining area. Monte Procinto, Monte Matanna, Monte Forato and Monte Pania della Croce are located nearby; they are all mountains in the vicinity of Stazzema.
Mountains and trails for active days
A moderately difficult hiking route leads from Stazzema, with a short detour to the Rifugio Forte dei Marmi, to the summit of Monte Matanna and back along the same route. It is also suitable for families with children. In the area around Stazzema, near Sant’Anna di Stazzema, the Sentieri di Pace form a network of six circular routes along historic mule tracks. The trails bring the history of the Sant’Anna massacre and the village to life.
The tourist tour of the Antro del Corchia follows a route of around two kilometres along a steel walkway, is conducted in groups and lasts approximately two hours. This means that, in addition to hikes, guided nature experiences with a clearly defined itinerary are also available.
Cuisine, chestnuts and museums
In Stazzema, you can sample dishes from the cuisine of Alta Versilia, including Tordelli versiliesi, ravioli seasoned with ragù, and desserts made with chestnut flour such as Castagnaccio and Ciacci with ricotta. Ballotti, chestnuts cooked with fennel seeds, are also part of this culinary tradition. Several metati in Stazzema are associated with the tradition of drying chestnuts.
There are four museums in the area around Stazzema: the Museo archeologico di Camaiore, the Museo D'Arte Sacra, the Museo Archeologico Versiliese "b. Antonucci" and the Barbara Paci Galleria d'Arte. This makes it possible to combine days in nature with historical and cultural visits.
