Holiday apartment in Careggine: winter, trails and mountain views

Careggine combines groomed slopes, Nordic skiing, trails through forests and scenic landscapes with a church history dating back to the early Middle Ages. The Careggine ski resort has three ski lifts serving alpine ski runs in the Formica and Monte la Cima areas; there are five kilometres of groomed runs in total.

Winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoes

In addition to the alpine runs, five kilometres of cross-country ski trails are available for active winter days, groomed for both classic and skating styles. In Careggine, snowshoes are also ideal for exploring the area's forests and clearings.

Circular trails and Isola Santa

Careggine also offers a range of options for walking. The Sentiero dei Mulini consists of two circular trails that meet in the area of the sports facilities, making a shorter walk possible as well. A more alpine character can be found in Isola Santa: the village lies at an altitude of 550 metres in the Apuan Alps, in the Garfagnana. It was probably founded in the High Middle Ages as a hospice on the road linking the Garfagnana with Versilia. Hiking trails from Isola Santa lead to Monte Corchia, Freddone and Monte Penna di Sumbra.

Parish church, views and Big Bench

The first records of Careggine date back to 720, when a chapel was consecrated that is now the parish church. The present-day parish church contains a stone altarpiece and a statue of Saint Anthony dated 1563 and attributed to Vincenzo Civitali. The large, bright yellow Big Bench offers a completely different highlight: from it, visitors can enjoy an impressive, unspoilt view of the Apuan Alps. The first Big Bench in Tuscany was inaugurated in 2019 and can be reached via a mule track leading to the “Dei Monti” viewpoint.

Bosa: nature observation and local produce

Bosa is home to the visitor centre of the Apuan Alps Regional Park. Bosa lies on a natural terrace overlooking Lake Vagli and the valley of the Edron River. The Museo della fauna di ieri e di oggi displays preserved animals that live today on the mountain peaks, in the alpine meadows and in the forests of the Apuan Alps. It also features life-size reconstructions of a cave bear and a cave lion, as well as original finds documenting their presence in this area. The Bottega offers fresh and preserved products, including items from short supply chains, heritage and local varieties, and niche products; organic and traditional production are among the most important characteristics of the range.
