Holiday apartment in Filicaia: Landscape, Culture and Farro

Filicaia Between Landscape and Local History

Filicaia combines a landscape shaped by agriculture with distinctive references to local history and commemorative culture. The Chiesa di San Rocco is the parish church of Filicaia. The village also has a medieval town layout. The church and town layout represent two different levels: religious architectural history and the historic form of the village. Villa Turri adds neoclassical architecture from the 19th century. Visitors interested in culture will find the Chiesa di San Rocco, Villa Turri and the Monumento ai Caduti in Filicaia.

Chestnut Forests, Terraces and Farro

The landscape of Filicaia is characterised by dense chestnut forests, arable land and extensive meadows. Terraces created by people make the slopes suitable for agriculture. The interplay of forest, open spaces and cultivated slopes gives the village a distinctly rural character. The terraces connect the slopes with the agricultural part of the landscape.

Church, Villa and War Memorial

Filicaia's cultural heritage includes several specific architectural and commemorative sites. Villa Turri was built in the 19th century in the neoclassical style. The Monumento ai Caduti di Filicaia was erected in 1925 and inaugurated in November of the same year. Its depiction shows a naked infantryman wearing a helmet and carrying a dagger, as well as an eagle at the top. The monument is made of locally sourced white marble. The monument is attributed to Guido Cheli. It was restored in 1978 and reinaugurated on 5 November of the same year. It is located on Via Francesco Vecchiacchi in Filicaia. The 1978 restoration belongs to a later phase than the construction and inauguration in 1925.

Historic Routes and Spatial Orientation

Filicaia stretches along the SR445 della Garfagnana; the village lies beyond Il Poggio in the direction of Castelnuovo. Filicaia is also located on the Via del Volto Santo, a branch of the Via Francigena. The Via del Volto Santo is considered a medieval mountain route that connected the Lunigiana and the Garfagnana with Lucca. For spatial planning, the road location and historic route connection can be considered separately. This may be of interest when planning your trip if you would like to combine cultural impressions with the landscape.

Farro Tradition and Events

Regional food culture also has a specific connection with Filicaia: Farro cultivation is widespread in Filicaia. The Festa del Farro celebrates the rich local gastronomic tradition, particularly Farro della Garfagnana. On every evening of the event, it includes live performances and musical entertainment for audiences of all ages. Farro della Garfagnana connects the festival with the regional cuisine of the Garfagnana. Live performances and musical entertainment also give each evening of the event an additional cultural focus.
