Holiday apartment in Gabbro: history, landscape and trails
Gabbro combines medieval origins with a landscape where geology, art history and trails exist closely side by side. Those who choose a holiday apartment in Gabbro will find a place where historical discoveries and active days can be combined in a tangible way.
History among villas and mills
During his so-called “Gabbro period”, Silvestro Lega frequently stayed at the villa of the Bandini family, friends of his, in Poggio Piano. Villa Mirabella, also known by the local name “Il Palazzo”, is another notable historical landmark in the area. It stands on a hill southeast of Gabbro and was probably built in the 1740s as a summer residence for the Finocchietti family.
The Castello Sonnino castle and Castello Pasquini castle are also located in the area around Gabbro. Numerous watermills once stood along the upper valley of the Botro Sanguigna; remains of them have survived. Exploring Gabbro thus leads from medieval origins through villas and castles to traces of the former use of the landscape.
Serpentinite, fossils and the landscape
Serpentinite crops out extensively around Gabbro and completely forms the distinctive ridge of Monte Carvoli. Another special natural feature is the fossil deposit near Gabbro. It includes fish, leaves, seeds from various plants, insects, insect larvae and bird feathers. This diversity also makes the landscape interesting for visitors who would like to examine geological and natural-history details more closely.
Trails for active days on holiday
