Holiday apartment in Livorno: art, waterfront promenade and culture

Livorno is a city of art, fortress history and natural history collections. The waterfront area is characterised by bridges, canals and old palaces reflected in the calm water. At the western end of Piazzale Mascagni is Terrazza Mascagni, one of the most important scenic settings along Livorno’s urban waterfront promenade. The Acquario di Livorno is located directly next to it, on Livorno’s waterfront promenade. It has 32 tanks with more than 1,700 animals from 300 different species.

Art and history

An important place for the city’s art history is Villa Mimbelli. It was commissioned by Francesco Mimbelli and inaugurated in 1868; many of its original frescoes and decorations have been preserved. The villa houses the Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori, which mainly displays paintings from the mid-19th century through the 1940s. These include significant groups of works by artists from Livorno.

Fortezza Vecchia has a medieval core around which the urban fabric of Livorno developed. Today, it serves as a special venue for numerous events in the fields of art, music and film. The Museo della Città offers another perspective on the city’s history. It opened in 2018 and is part of the Polo Culturale Bottini dell’Olio cultural centre in Livorno. Its collections include Etruscan and Roman archaeological finds, mosaics, sculptures, medieval documents, frescoes, coins and memorabilia from the Risorgimento.

The Teatro Carlo Goldoni also combines history and culture. It is the only large city theatre in Livorno to have survived the bombings of the Second World War. The theatre also features an exhibition tour dedicated to Pietro Mascagni. Numerous events take place every year within the old walls of Fortezza Nuova, including art exhibitions, concerts and performances.

Nature and routes

The Museo di Storia Naturale del Mediterraneo devotes approximately 6,000 m² to the natural sciences. The central complex houses five exhibition areas and a planetarium. Other components include a Historical Park, a Specola, storage collections, and research and training laboratories. The outdoor area includes a botanical garden with an area for aromatic plants, as well as an ethnobotanical garden with old fruit varieties.

Fortezza Nuova is a public park completely surrounded by the sea. From there, panoramic views extend over the canals of the Venezia and Pontino districts and the adjacent Piazza della Repubblica. The Livorno Street Art City route can be completed by bicycle in approximately one hour.

The connection to Santuario di Montenero is indicated from Livorno’s main railway station by bus route 2 to Piazza delle Carrozze, followed by the funicular railway.

Cuisine

Cacciucco is regarded as a culinary tradition with a distinctive character. It emerged from a complex and diverse combination of different forms of knowledge, flavours and identities.
