History and landscape in Castagneto Carducci
Castagneto Carducci invites you to combine history, landscape and regional culture. The historic centre developed around the Castello dei Della Gherardesca, which was built around the year 1000. Cobbled lanes and natural terraces characterise the town centre and offer views of the sea and the surrounding landscape. Gardens and access paths can be found along the walls of the Castello della Gherardesca.
At the Museo Archivio Giosuè Carducci, you can see books and magazines containing editions of his works, photographs from his circle, and drafts of poems connected to the region. Exhibition panels trace important stages of his literary work, which was closely linked to the scents, sounds and landscapes of the Maremma Pisana. Giosuè Carducci spent part of his childhood in Castagneto and Bolgheri.

Even the smaller places in the town centre tell stories of the past. Piazzetta della Gogna is a typical square in the historic centre; its name recalls the former public display of citizens at this location. Today, the piazzetta hosts concerts and cultural events. Teatro Roma was built in 1846 as a centre of local cultural life.
The Museo di Arte Sacra di Castagneto Carducci is located in the Chiesa della Madonna Del Carmine. The Chiesa di S. Lorenzo belongs to the Castello dei conti Della Gherardesca. The Church of Santissimo Crocifisso in the Borgo houses a famous wooden crucifix from the 15th century.
Nature, trails and the coastal landscape
The Padule di Bolgheri is a Special Protection Area and a bird protection area with Natura 2000 code IT5160004. Since 1977, it has also been a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The wildlife refuge was established in 1968, covers 500 hectares and lies on the northern boundary of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Grosseto–Livorno railway line.
Within the municipal area, walkable embankments lead through the Padule di Bolgheri to observation huts. There, you can watch the wildlife without disturbing it. Hikers can also take a trail in the area of the municipality of San Vincenzo which, after about 300 metres, connects with trails No. 3 and 4 of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci and leads to the entrance to the integrated trails of San Vincenzo, Castagneto C.cci, Sassetta and Campiglia M.ma.
