Smarano combines the landscape of the Predaia plateau with an unusually diverse range of impressions. Forests lie above the village, while orchards stretch below; between them, the landscape alternates between meadows and woodland. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Smarano will find a place where walks, active days and cultural discoveries can be combined to suit different travel plans.
Trails through the forest and across the plateau
A particularly distinctive experience is the Passeggiata della Merlonga, also known as the panoramic walk from Smarano or Crosare, which begins in Smarano. The easy, largely level circular trail leads through the forest. Along the way, there are viewpoints overlooking the lakes of Coredo and Tavon as well as the Sanctuary of San Romedio. With a stroller, the route can only be followed as far as the viewing terrace above San Romedio – an important distinction if you are planning excursions with young children.
Smarano also offers numerous walks with viewpoints, as well as trails through greenery and forests. These routes are suitable for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking and are suitable for tourists of all ages. There is also an equipped bouldering hall. The 12 signposted trekking routes of the Percorsi d’Anaunia in the Smarano area follow a restored old connection from Rocchetta to Castel Thun and run through beech and coniferous forests.
A place of art, history and music
Smarano’s cultural side is also very tangible. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta was rebuilt between 1759 and 1762 by Pietro Bianchi and his workshop after the previous building was destroyed by fire. The church houses the Ghilardi organ, built in 1992 and based on Flemish organ models from the 16th century.
Since 1993, the Accademia Internazionale di Smarano has organised concert series and high-level advanced training courses in early music on historical keyboard instruments. In Trentino, it attracts dozens of students and professionals from around the world every year. In recent years, it has developed from a specialised summer school into an international centre for advanced education, research and cultural production in the field of early music. The Smarano Academy Music Festival 2025 was a public summer concert series featuring recitals for organ, clavichord, harpsichord and fortepiano.
Restorers, painters, sculptors, as well as ironworkers and woodworkers are part of the local artistic and craft tradition. Another historical trace is provided by the “Statues of Smarano”: the two Roman sculptures were found in 1982 in a field in Smarano, date from the 1st century AD and represent the goddesses Victoria and Fortuna.
Which holiday apartment suits your stay
When choosing your holiday apartment in Smarano, you can tailor the focus of your stay to the local opportunities. Walking trails, forest routes, the bouldering hall and trekking routes support an active itinerary; the church, organ, academy and Roman sculptures add a cultural accent. In the Doss en Ciaura area by the Merlonga, there are fire pits, a wooden hut with a kitchen and toilets that can be used upon prior request to the Asuc di Smarano, nearby children’s play equipment and a large sports field.
