Holiday apartment in Sagron: nature, trails and mining history

Sagron lies on a hilltop at the confluence of the Torrente Mis and Torrente Pezzea. Sagron Mis is located between Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park and the National Park of the Belluno Dolomites. Choosing a holiday apartment in Sagron therefore means choosing a destination where landscapes, trails and local history are closely intertwined.

Waterways, culture and local history

From Primiero, you can reach Sagron and Mis via Passo Cereda in less than half an hour. The area’s cultural heritage includes several distinct landmarks: the Madonna di Caravaggio chapel near Marcoi in Sagron was rebuilt in 1812. The Sagra dei Marcoi takes place every year around 26 May. The Madonna di Loreto church near Marcoi in Sagron was destroyed by fire in July 1793; a new church with the same dedication was completed in 1795 in Salvadori in Sagron. The Madonna di Loreto church in Sagron itself had already been completed in 1630.

In the footsteps of mining and craftsmanship

The history of Sagron Mis is also connected with the people who lived there for a long time as chairmakers, charcoal burners, miners and lumberjacks. The Casina or Scudelina, at an elevation of 855 m, was the old mining base of the Austrian mines of Sagron-Mis. The Sentiero Mineralogico follows the traces of mercury and gold mining. Near the settlement of Vori, at an elevation of 883 m, a short detour leads to the opening of an old gold mine. The entrances to the old mercury mines south of the route can be reached via a convenient mule track.

Trails for curious and active days away

At Chalet Giasenei stands Torre T3, a viewpoint with a climbing wall and a telescope for observing the night sky. This is also where the Intrecci del tempo themed trail begins. It leads through beech and fir forests and partly follows old paths as well as convenient forest roads. Local history is presented along the trail through 16 information totems and 3 interpretive harps. For a longer tour, the first stage of the Croda Granda–Agner Wild Trek connects Sagron Mis with Malga Cavallera via the Sentiero delle Regade; this trail is part of Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 2. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore weigh up short discoveries, historical themes and longer mountain trails.

The ongoing development of individual places is also part of the region’s character, without being equated with existing offerings: modernization and safety measures were planned for the route from the Terrabugio mercury mine on the Torrente Pezzea to the lower districts of Sagron in Località Scudelina. At the Terrabugio mine, the cleaning and consolidation of the ruins of the smelting furnaces, as well as the creation of a rest and information area, were also planned. The sports field in Sagron is additionally associated with plans for a bike park.
