Holiday apartment in Prissian amid history and trails

St. Martin’s Church was first mentioned in official records in 1380, but is probably older, as Goswin had already recorded it as existing in 1159 in his Marienberg Chronicle. It acquired its present form around 1630; the altar was renovated later and adorned with a painting by Baroque artist Stefan Kessler. The historic stone bridge in the centre of Prissian is locally known as the “Stuanbogen” and was first mentioned in 1308. Castel Katzenzungen was first mentioned in official records in 1244 under its owner Henricus de Cazenzunge. The Casatsch Pfeffersburg ruins offer a wonderful view of the Adige Valley.

Forest trails steeped in history and nature

The approximately 1.5 km circular Vorbichl nature trail follows broad forest paths back to the “Löschteich” pond. Several stations and information boards focus on the history and nature of Vorbichl, while several picnic areas invite visitors to linger. The hike “Katzenzungen Castle with the Versoaln vine and Red Trail” begins at public car park no. 4 in the village centre and follows trail marker no. 17 across the old stone bridge with a wooden roof. After about 500 m along the pavement, you reach St. Martin’s Church; the paved road then leads downhill to Castel Katzenzungen, before the route follows trail marker no. 17 again.

Versoaln vine and wine tours

On the northern slope of the castle, the more than 360-year-old indigenous Versoaln vine spreads across a traditional chestnut-wood pergola with a 300 m² leafy canopy. Winery tours are regularly held at the Großkemat Winery by prior arrangement. On request, visitors can book an experience including a guided tour of Castel Katzenzungen, the Versoaln vine and the owner’s collection, featuring works by important South Tyrolean artists from the recent past, fossils and petrified wood, followed by an aperitif.

Chestnut Days and Kneipp treatments

The KESCHTNRIGGL Chestnut Days have taken place every year in late autumn since 1998. In Tisens-Prissian, Völlan and Lana, they offer insights into the region’s culture and customs, as well as the chestnut and its importance to local residents. Participating restaurants serve traditional and modern chestnut dishes. At the Kneipp health facility in Prissian, water treatments and their invigorating effects take centre stage. During guided tours, visitors receive tips on the health teachings of Father Kneipp, including at a Kneipp coffee event.
