Holiday apartment in Predazzo: geology, the Dolomites and family experiences
Predazzo is known as the “Geological Garden of the Alps” because of its high concentration of geological varieties. At the same time, the town has a history of winter sports: the Predazzo Ski Jumping Stadium hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1991, 2003 and 2013. Here, geological features, mountains and sporting tradition come together in a single destination.
Landscape between volcanic relics and the Foresta dei Violini
Along the Doss Capèl geological trail between Passo Feudo and Alpe di Pampeago, at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,200 metres, marine fossils as well as lava, ash and lapilli from the ancient volcano of Predazzo can be seen. The Centro visitatori di Paneveggio offers another way to experience nature in the wider area around Predazzo: it is located on the road from Predazzo to Passo Rolle, in the middle of the spruce forest known as the Foresta dei Violini.
At the visitor centre, the “Suona Foresta” installation explains the surrounding forest, which is known for its resonance wood. Nearby, a large enclosure allows visitors to observe a group of large ungulates at close range.
Walks, cycle route and Biolago
Around Predazzo, a walking trail leads to the Sottosassa gorge. There, visitors can admire the Travignolo waterfalls beneath porphyry walls equipped for sport climbing. The Passeggiata lungo Avisio takes around 30 to 45 minutes, is suitable for all age groups and can also be used with a pushchair.
On the return journey, the Easy Bike Ring - rosso follows the historic Dolomites cycle route through the green meadows around Predazzo. Along the way, it offers views of the Latemar Dolomites and leads to the new Biolago. The natural swimming pool was opened to the public in August 2020. Its water comes from a drinking-water well and a mountain stream; it is purified exclusively by plants and microorganisms in special pools.
Predazzo shaped by geology and history
The Museo Geologico delle Dolomiti is located on Predazzo’s central square. It was inaugurated in Predazzo in 1899 and reopened in 2015 after extensive renovation, with a modern, interactive exhibition. Guided tours can be booked by telephone on 0462 500366 or by email at museo.predazzo@muse.it.
Predazzo’s historic centre is dominated by the neo-Gothic Church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo, built in 1870. The Church of S. Nicolò is the oldest church in Predazzo and dates back to the 16th century. Both religious buildings complement the geological focus with visible local history.
Regional traditions and holiday ideas
The annual Festa di San Giacomo in Predazzo includes a market and an event day open to residents, families and tourists. A taste of the local cuisine is Puzzone di Moena, the most important product of the Caseificio Sociale di Predazzo e Moena dairy, which is still made according to the original recipe.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Predazzo, you can organise your preferred days of holiday around these main themes: the town centre and culture, walks and nature observation, cycling and water, or excursions into the wider Paneveggio area. This allows you to base your accommodation choice on the interests of your travel group without reducing the town’s variety to a single type of holiday.
