Paneveggio combines an expansive forest landscape with impressive trails, wildlife observation opportunities and traces of regional history. The Foresta demaniale di Paneveggio lies entirely within the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Nature Park. It covers around 2,700 hectares in the upper Travignolo basin and extends across elevations from 1,400 to 2,150 metres. The Foresta di Paneveggio consists predominantly of spruce trees in its tree layer. Around 85 percent of the trees belong to this species and occupy the elevation range from 1,500 to 1,900 metres. Nature and craftsmanship come together here in a special way, without the forest landscape losing its original focus.

An important point of reference for exploring the area is the Centro Visitatori di Paneveggio. It is located near Lago di Forte Buso on the SS50, which leads from Predazzo to Passo Rolle. At the visitor centre, the “Suona Foresta” installation conveys the surrounding Foresta di Paneveggio and its inhabitants through sounds, songs, rustling and melodies. The history of the deer is also part of the place: their reintroduction in Trentino began in Paneveggio in the 1960s. A wildlife park is also located around 100 metres from the Sentiero Marciò, where several deer are kept in near-natural conditions.

The Sentiero Marciò begins at the car park next to the Centro Visitatori di Paneveggio and runs as a circular trail with information panels. First, it crosses the Travignolo on a covered bridge; later, a suspension bridge leads over a narrow gorge where rapids and waterfalls form. When there is no snow or ice, the Sentiero Marciò can also be used by people with reduced mobility and families with prams. This combination of forest, water and informative stations makes the trail a clearly distinctive option among the experiences in Paneveggio.

For longer days in the mountains, the circular trail from Paneveggio to Malga Bocche is an option. The outward journey takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, and roughly the same amount of time should be allowed for the return journey. The route leads from Paneveggio at 1,524 metres to Malga Bocche at 1,946 metres and has around 400 metres of elevation gain. The trail initially runs through the Foresta di Paneveggio before reaching the pastures of Malga Bocche, where both Dolomitic and porphyry landscapes can be observed.

Culture and the past are also closely intertwined in Paneveggio. The Chiesetta dell’Assunta di Paneveggio was rebuilt in 1926 after being set on fire by Austrian soldiers in 1915. A former hospice in Paneveggio, together with the hospice of Santi Martino e Giuliano in Castrozza, served travellers crossing the Rolle and Valles passes along difficult routes. With the rise of tourism in the second half of the 19th century, it was converted into a hotel. Forte Dossaccio was built between 1890 and 1895 on the summit of the mountain of the same name at an elevation of 1,838 metres as a military fortification.

For active days, the Caoria–Paneveggio cycling and walking route complements the range of activities. It is just under 36.5 kilometres long, of which 33 kilometres run along forest roads and 3.4 kilometres along existing paths. The bookable experience “Vita tra gli alberi. Tracce ed intrecci nel bosco”, lasting around two and a half hours, starts at the Centro Visitatori Paneveggio and focuses on forest ecology, nature conservation and forest management. Advance registration by 18:00 on the previous day is required for “Alla scoperta di Paneveggio, la Foresta che Suona”.
