Discover Mazzin: Culture, Hiking and Holiday Apartments
Mazzin combines archaeological traces, historic houses and striking mountain scenery with clear opportunities for active days. When choosing a holiday apartment in Mazzin, you can tailor your stay according to whether you would like to focus on culture, short walking experiences, summer hikes or winter activities.
Archaeology and local history in Mazzin
The Doss dei Pigui archaeological site can be reached via a path near Mazzin’s playground. The excavations uncovered five hearths, extensive terracing and two stone mills, one made of granite and one of porphyry. Decorated ceramic and terracotta objects were also found. Doss dei Pigui is a fortified settlement from the Second Iron Age, dated to around 1000 BC, that was permanently inhabited for centuries.
Many of the objects and bronze jewellery pieces found at Doss dei Pigui can be viewed at the Museo Ladin de Fascia in Vigo di Fassa. The history of Mazzin also includes the “pitores fassani”: seasonal craftsmen who temporarily emigrated to decorate houses and monuments. Exploring the area thus leads from the traces of an early settlement to regional craftsmanship.
Historic houses and sacred traces
The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Mazzin is in the Late Gothic style, dates from 1573 and was extended in 1894. Another notable building is Casa Battel, considered the only rustic manor house in Val di Fassa. The house features decorative elements, frescoes of considerable artistic value and a pointed tower.
Casa Cassan is associated with the names Casa Battel and Casa del Moro. The building was constructed in the 16th century and decorated with frescoes in 1785, when it became the “Gasthaus zum schwarzen Mann” inn run by Jakob Cassan. For visitors interested in culture, this places several different historical points of interest directly within Mazzin’s local history.
Hiking with clearly defined stages
Cultural Route 52 begins and ends in Mazzin. It is 4.2 km long and takes approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes. These approximate times and distances make it easier to plan your day without equating the route with the longer hiking destinations.
In summer, Mazzin is a starting point for numerous hikes leading into Val Udai. Summer hikes from Mazzin also lead to Lago d’Antermoia, a high-altitude alpine lake with crystal-clear water on the Catinaccio. Those choosing a holiday apartment in Mazzin can therefore weigh up whether to focus their trip on cultural exploration or extended days in the mountains.
The mountain scenery of Mazzin
The rock walls of Catinaccio d’Antemonia, rising to 3002 m, form the backdrop to Mazzin. The rock walls of Cima Dodici, rising to 2446 m, also form the backdrop to the village. These two elevations give the landscape a concrete dimension and make it clear why Mazzin is interesting both for cultural discoveries and hiking ideas.
Choosing a holiday apartment in Mazzin according to your travel interests
Mazzin offers various themes for planning your trip: Doss dei Pigui and the historic buildings are ideal for culture-focused days, Cultural Route 52 offers a shorter, defined trail, while Val Udai and Lago d’Antermoia are destinations for summer hikes. In winter, direct access to the renowned Marcialonga di Fiemme e Fassa cross-country ski trail adds to the range of activities. The trail leads towards Canazei in one direction and towards Moena in the other.
A free ski bus provides transport from Mazzin towards the lifts of the Dolomiti Superski ski area. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore already organise the character of your stay according to your preferred activities: historic discoveries, hiking, cross-country skiing or travelling towards the ski lifts.
