Lenzi - Stefani: Discover Culture and Mining

In Lenzi - Stefani, Mòcheno culture, mining history and specific routes through the Valle dei Mòcheni come together. The Bersntoler Cultural Institute, the S’Pèrgmandlhaus Mineral Museum, the Mulino Lenzi and the Anello dei Minatori each focus on different aspects. Language and traditions stand alongside minerals and work tools, while grain processing is presented alongside routes to mines and Lago di Erdemolo.

Mòcheno Culture and Language

At the Bersntoler Cultural Institute, a permanent exhibition is dedicated to the area and the Mòcheno community. The permanent exhibition covers a broad span of time. Its chronological scope ranges from the first human traces through medieval colonisation and farming settlements to mining, traditions and language. Multimedia stations allow visitors to explore audio narratives and documentary films.

Mining History at the Mineral Museum

The S’Pèrgmandlhaus Mineral Museum was conceived as a link to the Erdemolo Mine (Gruab va Hardimbl). On two floors, the museum displays minerals and tools used by miners. A video room explores the history of Palù del Fersina and the coexistence of the valley’s inhabitants with mining. Mining is presented in different ways at the Cultural Institute, the Mineral Museum and along the Anello dei Minatori.

The Anello dei Minatori through the Valle dei Mòcheni

The Anello dei Minatori is a circular route through the mining history of the Valle dei Mòcheni. Its course includes old mines, museums, farmsteads, archaeological sites and evidence of the local culture. The outward route follows a forest road along the left orographic side of the Fersina River to Maso Lenzi and the Erdemolo Mine. The return route runs via Fernù and Stelder, passes the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena and leads through the historic centre of Stefani-Steffener.

Mill, Flour and Mòcheno Traditions

Today, the Mulino Lenzi is part of the Ethnographic Museums of Trentino. During a visit, visitors can learn how the millstones work and discover the individual steps involved in grain processing. They can also observe the production of local flours. The Mulino Lenzi presents millstones, grain processing and local flours in a tangible context. The Mostra Klòffen exhibition uses panels, objects and documents to convey the history and traditions of the Mòcheno population from colonisation to the present day. Mostra Klòffen includes the Stela, an object that was used in Palù del Fersina for a long time.

Routes to the Mine and Lago di Erdemolo

From the car park in the village of Fròtten, a footpath leads towards Lago di Erdemolo and the De Gruab va Hardimbl Mine; the walk takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes. During an excursion to Lago di Erdemolo, the footpath began in the village of Lenzi in Palù del Fersina, at the town hall square, and led towards the village of Frotteni. Lago di Erdemolo is therefore both the direction of travel from Fròtten and the destination of the excursion from Lenzi.
