The Darzo mining site is located in the hamlet of Marìgole, in the wooded mountains immediately above the village, at an altitude of 1,100 metres. In the mining village of Darzo, guided tours are offered of a gallery, the workshops, a sawmill and the miners’ house. The development of the barite mines shaped the transformation from an agricultural to an industrial society in Darzo and other villages in the Chiese Valley; the first mines opened in 1894, and the tunnels of the last mine were permanently closed in 2009. In the centre of Darzo stands the Church of San Giovanni Nepomuceno, built between 1754 and 1777. Its foundation stone was laid on 16 May 1754 and blessed by the dean of Condino, Don Antonio Pellizzari. The façade also deserves a close look: it is divided by two rows of four pilasters each, with Ionic pilasters below and Tuscan pilasters above.

The former Church of San Michele in Darzo contained an extensive fresco cycle created in the 1480s by the workshop of the Baschenis from Averara. Fragments of painted plaster from San Michele in Darzo were found during archaeological excavations in 2008 beneath the floor of the present-day church and are kept in the storage facilities of the Soprintendenza.

Murals and mountain paths

The murals in Darzo form an ideal circular route called “La strada delle miniere”. Along this route, the murals depict the miners of Darzo as well as the processing, extraction, sorting and transportation of the mineral. The Via Vècia is an old mule track leading to the alpine pastures and grazing areas of Darzo, whose traces can be followed on foot or by bicycle. This allows you to combine a visual approach to mining with the opportunity to explore old paths through the landscape.

Nature observation and a typical product

The wetland near Darzo contains a small pond with an observation tower, from which waterbirds can be watched without disturbing them. Marroni di Darzo are among the typical local products of Trentino.
