Holiday apartment in Calavino: waterways, frescoes and local history

Calavino is set in a village landscape surrounded by vineyards and orchards. The churches of San Floriano and Santa Maria Assunta are among the village’s religious landmarks. Agricultural areas, waterways and historic buildings also form part of Calavino’s character.

Waterways and gorge

The Roggia runs through Calavino with a series of waterfalls and small cascades, flows into the Canevai Gorge and then into Lake Toblino. The Roggia di Calavino trail runs through the narrow Canevai Gorge between Dosfolòn and Casai. At the waterfalls and cascades, the movement of the water takes centre stage, while the narrow gorge defines this section of the route. Along the described route, the flow into Lake Toblino follows the gorge section.

Loop trail with a fixed length

Another route is the Anello Calavino–Lasino–Castel Madruzzo loop trail. It is 8.6 kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by mountain bike. One route runs through the narrow Canevai Gorge, while the other is an 8.6-kilometre loop that can be completed on foot or by mountain bike.

Frescoes in the churches

The Cappella del Rosario in the church of San Floriano and Santa Maria Assunta is decorated with frescoes depicting the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary. The church of Santa Maria Assunta also houses a fresco created in 1549 depicting ten members of the noble Madruzzo family. Carta di Regola and Palazzo Negri

The Carta di Regola of Calavino was a set of rules governing community life, consisting of 27 articles and approved in 1493. Palazzo Negri di San Pietro shapes the townscape of Calavino and towers over the village. The 1493 regulations and the palazzo are among the village’s historic landmarks.

Palio and Feste Madruzziane

The Palio dei Rioni includes a competition in which water is drawn from the fountain in the Piazzetta using old containers such as wooden buckets and barrels. During the Feste Madruzziane, the streets of Calavino were transformed into a medieval village for a weekend every July. The Palio remains centred on the fountain in the Piazzetta, while the Feste Madruzziane involve the streets of Calavino. July and a weekend define the timeframe of the Feste Madruzziane.

Molino Pisoni and grappa

The Molino Pisoni mill has been operating since 1870 and still produces various types of flour today. Grappa produced in Calavino is also among the local products recommended for tasting. The various types of flour and grappa represent two different aspects of local production.
