The cultural history reaches far back. In 1235, Emperor Frederick II gave the parish of Silandro to the Teutonic Order. The Teutonic Order’s commandery is located in the immediate vicinity of Silandro parish church and can be identified by its distinctive entrance gate bearing the cross of the Teutonic Order. The parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was rebuilt in the Gothic style after being plundered by the Engadin people in 1499 and reconsecrated in 1505. The Capuchin monastery and Capuchin church in Silandro were built in 1644.

Schlandersburg Castle represents a later historical layer: around 1600, the Counts of Hendl converted the complex into a Renaissance castle. Its characteristic features include the two-storey loggias with closely spaced round columns and the fireplaces decorated with sgraffito. In the entrance area of the Schlandersburg library, the remains of a residential tower built in the 13th century have also been preserved. The Schlandersburg library houses a permanent exhibition on the menhirs of Vezzano.

Two large marble menhirs discovered in Vezzano in 2012 were placed in the old chapel of Schlandersburg after extensive archaeological investigations. The Schlandersburg central library has a lift and an accessible toilet; the third floor can only be reached by stairs. Concerts are held in the courtyard of the central library during the summer.

The Freienturm tower also contributes to the historic character: it is an old medieval Romanesque residential tower that was converted into a manor house with valuable architectural details. The present building was erected approximately between 1720 and 1730. Schlandersberg Castle is located above the village of Silandro, in the Monte Mezzodì district; it was built in the 13th century at an altitude of 1,050 metres.

The “avimundus” visitor centre in Silandro’s pedestrian zone is dedicated to the birdlife of Stelvio National Park. Avimundus presents selected bird species according to their habitats and provides information about breeding and rearing, as well as about the birds’ calls and songs. The hiking trails around Silandro include the irrigation-channel paths on the dry Sonnenberg mountain, with its steppe-like flora and fauna. Silandro outdoor swimming pool has a 150 m² outdoor bouldering wall that is 4.5 metres high. In the heart of Silandro, Plawennpark provides the setting for weekly evening concerts during the summer months.

Thursday is part of regional everyday life: a weekly and farmers’ market is held at the Stainer car park and in Plawennpark on that day.
