Prad am Stilfserjoch combines an impressive range of elevations with nature trails, historic sites and unusually vibrant traditions. The village stretches from the foot of Stelvio National Park at 900 metres to the Lichtenberg farmsteads at 1,500 metres. Nature and trails for different kinds of holiday days
A defining feature of the landscape is the protected Prader Sand biotope, a natural alluvial area on the sandy river delta of the Suldenbach stream. Three different hiking routes lead through the floodplain landscape to the Fischerseen lakes; the paths through Prader Sand are also suitable for families with pushchairs. Those who want to discover plants and the landscape more consciously will find a total of 54 tree and shrub species from the moist valleys of the Nörderberg and the dry Sonnenberg along the 4-kilometre Nittweg educational woodland trail. The Lottersteig leads through meadows and forests above Prad am Stilfserjoch and offers views of the village as well as the entire Upper and Lower Vinschgau.
Hikes with a focus on cultural history can also be included in your plans. The Archaikweg circular trail follows sections of the historic Alpine crossing route and passes the prehistoric settlement of “Gaschlin”. From Prad am Stilfserjoch, it runs towards Agums and the upper Suldenbach bridge, where the entrance to Trail No. 11 is located. The 2-kilometre circular route of the Gumperle Trail starts below St. George’s Church in Agums. The different route lengths and themes provide a clear basis for combining active days with shorter ones.
Churches, frescoes and Prad traditions
One of the special cultural and historical attractions is the churchyard of St. John’s Church in Prad am Stilfserjoch. The grave of botanist Hermann Müller is located there and is commemorated by a marble plaque. In Lichtenberg, the St. Christina Chapel dates back to 1575; it has a three-sided closed chancel, wall paintings and a shingle roof. Lichtenberg’s parish church contains structural elements and frescoes from the 13th century. A few frescoes have been preserved in the chapel of Lichtenberg Castle ruins; they were restored in 2006. St. George’s Church in Agums forms an ensemble comprising the church, cemetery chapel and cemetery, and because of its exposed location, many hikers use it as a panoramic viewing platform.
Prad am Stilfserjoch also expresses its local culture through festive rituals. Every year, on the third Sunday after Pentecost, Sacred Heart fires are lit on the ridges above Prad am Stilfserjoch. The Zusslrennen is an old tradition found only in Prad for driving out winter; it is a carnival procession and noise ritual. During the event, young men wear white garments decorated with colourful paper flowers and often carry cowbells weighing more than 20 kilograms. The traditional Maschgertanz is an old carnival custom in which masked couples move from inn to inn and dance according to established rituals.
Active excursions and the right accommodation
The Stelvio Tour from Prad am Stilfserjoch is another highlight for sporty days on holiday. It covers 25 kilometres, around 1,800 metres of elevation gain and a total of 48 hairpin bends. The aquaprad visitor centre can be reached by the Vinschgau railway to Spondinig or Mals, followed by bus route 271 or a shuttle bus. The experiences range from floodplain landscapes and cultural trails to local traditions and the sporting challenge of the Stelvio Tour.
