Holiday apartment in Burgeis between culture and mountain trails

Marienberg Abbey is located at an altitude of around 1,350 metres on the mountainside above the village of Burgeis, on the road towards Schlinig and Watles. The monastery was founded in the 12th century and is still a Benedictine monastery. It is also interesting for cyclists: Marienberg can be reached via a short detour from the Etsch cycle route.

Several religious buildings add distinctive accents to the historic townscape. The cemetery church of St Michael has a Romanesque round apse built into the thickness of the wall. Traces of 13th-century frescoes have been preserved on the north wall of St Michael's Chapel. The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Burgeis was built at the end of the 17th century.

The medieval Fürstenburg complex in Burgeis was built in the 13th century by Chur Bishop Konrad; its keep has walls three metres thick. Fresco remnants from the 13th century have been preserved in St Nicholas Church. According to an inscription, it was first consecrated around 1199. From 10 April to 30 October 2026, guided tours take place there every Friday at 5 p.m.

Hiking trails with different focuses

The Sonnensteig themed trail begins at Marienberg Abbey at an altitude of 1,338 metres. The section from the monastery to Burgeis is dedicated to the Benedictines. Along the trail, information boards explain interesting facts about Saint Benedict, the irrigation channels, nature and the legends of the Upper Vinschgau. The short Benedict's Trail leads from Burgusio to Marienberg Abbey.

Another tour takes the form of a circular hike to Burgeis's mountain lake. It begins at the information office in Burgeis, initially follows Trail No. 3 to the mountain lake above the village and returns to the village via Trail No. 4. The different routes help you weigh up whether to choose cultural discovery or a day of hiking with a return to Burgeis when selecting your accommodation.

An outing for children at Watles

The Spielesee at Watles above Burgeis covers 1,500 m² and offers children free adventure with a wooden raft, a spring, a two-metre-high waterfall and a small stream. This specific experience complements the historical and landscape-related themes with a playful option for a shared family day.

Burgeis can be reached by Citybus 274 and regional bus 273. At Marienberg Abbey, the “Ora et labora” museum, the monastery shop and the abbey church are accessible without barriers. The “Ora et labora” museum is open to the public; admission is charged.
