Holiday apartment in Ridanna: Mining, hiking trails and mountain panorama
Ridanna combines mining history with paths through the Ridnaun Valley and alpine viewpoints. During your stay in a holiday apartment in Ridanna, this combination opens up various ideas for your days: historical insights, hikes and mountain views.
Mining history and special insights
The permanent exhibition in Ridanna explores the local mining tradition through personal belongings and private photographs of miners and their families. Another exhibition explains methods for surveying tunnels and mining areas for the excavation of tunnels and the use of mining areas.
The valley’s historical heritage also includes the nearby Chapel of St. Magdalena. It houses a Late Gothic winged altarpiece from the workshop of Matheis Stöberl, dating from 1509. The chapel was first mentioned in 1273; the present building was erected by the miners of the Schneeberg mine in 1480/81.
The mining history is brought particularly vividly to life during the guided tour “A Day in the Mine”. It includes a two-and-a-half-hour mountain hike along old paths used by miners and for transporting ore, leading to the miners’ village of Monteneve. The return route covers 6 kilometres: 3 kilometres are completed on foot and 3 kilometres by mine train.
During the “Tour del minatore” guided tour, visitors descend almost 300 steps and return to the Poschhaus Gallery. Ore veins are still visible there, and visitors can try their hand at being miners. The tour begins with a shuttle bus to the Poschhaus Gallery at an altitude of 2,000 metres. Visitors then travel by mine train towards the ore deposits before the tour through tunnels and galleries begins. Reservation is mandatory for this tour; bookings can be made by telephone or email.
Hiking trails in the Ridnaun Valley
A circular hike also links several defining destinations. It starts at the community centre in Ridnaun, follows the Obere Erzstraße to Maiern and the Mining Museum, then continues to the Church of St. Magdalena before returning to the starting point.
From the end of the Ridnaun Valley, hiking trail no. 9 leads through the forest to the entrance of Burkhard Gorge. The hike to Stadlalm also begins at the end of the valley and follows hiking trail no. 28 past the mine’s ore-processing facility.
For views of the mountains, the 360° Fuchssee panoramic platform in the Ridnaun Alpine Pasture World offers a 360° panoramic view. Important mountain peaks and mountain ranges are marked in the direction of view for orientation.
Winter activities and choosing your accommodation
The Ridnaun Biathlon Centre has a shooting range and is located directly at the start of the cross-country ski trails in Ridnaun. This adds winter sports to the valley’s historical and hiking experiences.
For families with different interests, the choice of a holiday apartment in Ridanna can be guided by these ideas for the day: culture enthusiasts can combine the museum and chapel, while hikers can choose between the circular trail, Burkhard Gorge and Stadlalm. The Fuchssee platform provides a focus on panoramic views; the biathlon centre and cross-country ski trails represent winter activities. This allows you to choose your accommodation according to your preferred holiday rhythm – between historical discovery, hiking, panoramic views and winter sports.
