Culture with deep roots in Innichen

Innichen is a destination for travellers who want to combine experiences in nature with culture. A Benedictine monastery was founded in San Candido in 769. San Candido is considered the oldest monastery and one of the oldest settlements in Tyrol. This long history gives the town a special appeal for anyone who wants to shape their holiday not only around activities, but also around historical discoveries.

An important cultural attraction is the Museo della Collegiata di San Candido. It is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the Puster Valley. The museum includes the cathedral treasury, sacred art from the collegiate church and a collection of manuscripts. The collegiate church itself also deserves attention: it is considered the finest example of Romanesque architecture in the Eastern Alps.

Views and trails on Baranci

Those who enjoy exploring Innichen on foot will find an impressive destination in the hike from San Candido to the Piccola Rocca dei Baranci. The trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking San Candido. On part of the ascent, the Three Peaks of Lavaredo can also be seen.

In summer, Monte Baranci offers everything from peaceful hiking trails and an adventure park for children to a summer toboggan run. In winter, family-friendly ski slopes and tobogganing opportunities are added. The Funbob Baranci can reach speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour; passengers regulate the speed themselves. This makes it possible to combine more relaxed and more dynamic activities according to the preferred pace of the day.

Innichen for cycling and Dolomite views

Cyclists will also find a range of options. The San Candido–Lienz cycle path follows the Drau Cycle Path for 44 kilometres and is classified as easy. It connects San Candido with Lienz in Austria and is suitable for all types of bicycles, including e-bikes. For a more challenging perspective, there is the MTB tour from San Candido through Val Campo di Dentro to the Drei-Schuster-Hütte mountain hut. Along the route, the peaks of the Sexten Dolomites draw closer.

For a cycling excursion, the 44-kilometre cycle path provides a clearly defined scope. Its easy difficulty level and suitability for all types of bicycles, including e-bikes, leave the choice of bicycle open. At Monte Baranci, the season becomes a planning factor: summer and winter each offer their own combinations of trails, riding activities, ski slopes and tobogganing opportunities. In Innichen, this means that a day of cycling and a mountain programme can be planned as separate types of days.
