Alpine pastures, pilgrimage and village culture in Lazfons

Hike to the Latzfonser Kreuz

A scenic circular hike from Kaseregg to the Latzfonser Kreuz leads through the Latzfonser Alm to the pilgrimage site at an altitude of 2,311 metres. The Latzfonser Kreuz is the highest pilgrimage site in South Tyrol and one of the highest pilgrimage sites in Europe. The hike thus combines landscape and religious significance in a clearly recognisable destination.

The “Nock” climbing garden is also located in the wild and romantic Tinnetal valley. The small valley west of Klausen stretches south of Mount Säbener Berg to Latzfons. The climbing garden offers beginners and advanced climbers opportunities for outdoor climbing as well as climbing courses. This adds an active alternative away from the alpine pasture trails to your travel plans.

Customs and notable village stories

The “Black Jesus Christ” is a black, carved Gothic wooden cross. Every year in June, numerous believers carry it from the parish church in the village of Latzfons to the Latzfonser Kreuz, where it remains throughout the summer. In Latzfons, the Almabtrieb, the traditional driving down of the cattle from the mountain pastures, is also celebrated every year on the second weekend of September.

The Church of St James in Lazfons is part of the history of local architectural culture: the architect Albert Torggler from Merano was responsible for its extension project in 1999. A culinary speciality is the Pfattner Johann butcher’s shop in Latzfons. Its sample received the gold award in the 2015 bacon comparison test, among 47 South Tyrolean bacon hams.

Winter tours and starting points

The most popular starting points with parking facilities for the Latzfonser Alm are Kaseregg, Kühhof and Steineben; the Öberst car park is also used for winter tours. A winter and snowshoe hike leads from the Kühhof car park to the Klausner Hütte. From Steineben, a ski tour leads to Lorenzispitze, called Cima S. Lorenzo in Italian, on the Latzfonser Alm. There is a natural toboggan run and a family toboggan run there.

Getting there and choosing your location

Latzfons can be reached by public transport. From Klausen, line 343 connects with line 342 in the village of Feldthurns; from Brixen, line 342 runs directly. Both connections operate hourly. The route leads along the regional road towards Feldthurns and then onwards to Latzfons. The distance from Klausen is 10 km.
