Brixen’s historic centre is an extensive medieval centre and is protected as a historic monument. Brixen Cathedral defines this historic centre and dates back to 980 AD.

The Bishop’s Palace is also known as the Hofburg and was built in the 13th century by the Prince-Bishops of Brixen. It houses the Diocesan Museum and the Diocesan Archive. The Diocesan Museum presents the Brixen Cathedral Treasury and valuable works of art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century in more than 70 exhibition rooms. The Brixen Pharmacy Museum complements this with 400 years of pharmaceutical history presented through the example of a Brixen pharmacist’s family. The cloister is a Romanesque structure with vaults dating from the 14th century. Its 14th- and 15th-century frescoes show the development of medieval art.

The Stufels district was already settled in the Neolithic period and is known as an artists’ quarter. At the Brixen City Gallery, located in the heart of the Old Town, the architecture forms a link between the arcades and Cathedral Square.

At the southern end of the Rapp Gardens, the Isarco and Rienz rivers meet. During the annual Water Light Festival in May, there is an installation at this confluence. Brixen railway station is within walking distance of the historic Old Town. Alternatively, city buses connect the railway station with the centre and the surrounding villages.

In the immediate vicinity of Brixen, the Plose hiking area offers the family trails WoodyWalk and Lorggen.
