Discover churches and art history
The Chiesa di San Rocco is located in the main square of Castagnole Piemonte. Its construction began in 1634 following a vow made by the residents to Saint Roch. The Baroque façade features engaged columns and false capitals, creating a striking architectural accent in the townscape.
The Chiesa di San Pietro has a history that reaches back considerably further. Its foundation can be traced to around the year 1000; it is mentioned in a document from 1037 written by Landolfo, the bishop of Turin. Inside there is a fresco of the Virgin and Child, probably by the Maestro di Cercenasco or a pupil from his school, dating from the late 15th or early 16th century.
The Chiesa di San Bernardino also leads into the history of art and the town. In the 17th century, it was the seat of the Battuti Bianchi brotherhood and has a typically 17th-century façade. Inside there is a plaster statue of the Madonna created in 1829 by Amedeo Lavy. A cultural tour in Castagnole Piemonte is dedicated to this artist’s works. Before and after the Restoration, Amedeo Lavy worked as an engraver at the Savoy mint.
Caritun and seasonal specialities
A special culinary detail is Caritun. This is a round, flat, focaccia-like sweet made with a yeast-dough base and strawberries arranged in a spiral. Caritun is highly seasonal and can only be prepared in autumn and the first part of winter. The dish has received the municipal De.Co. designation from the municipalities of Piobesi Torinese and Castagnole Piemonte. Castagnole Piemonte is therefore part of an extensive circular route with several historic destinations. The Virle Piemonte MTB route passes the Sant’Antonio Abate chapel on the outskirts of Castagnole Piemonte, dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot. It was probably built in the 17th century to protect the area from epidemics. The MTB route also passes the entrance to Castello dei Marchesi Romagnano.
