Culture and history

In the centre of Turin, eleven components belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Residences of the Royal House of Savoy. The Galleria Sabauda offers comprehensive access to art history: it displays more than 500 works from the Savoy dynastic collections and spans European art from the 14th to the 20th century. Palazzo Madama also brings together several collection areas. There, a museum of the city and the Piedmontese region meets a museum of decorative art from all eras and regions. The ceramics collection of Palazzo Madama comprises more than 4,000 pieces and is one of the most important in Italy.

The Museo Egizio is the oldest museum in the world devoted entirely to Egyptian culture. Its foundation in 1824 goes back to the collection assembled by Bernardino Drovetti. The Museo Civico Pietro Micca focuses on a different historical period. It displays models, prints, weapons and memorabilia from the respective era; the visit also includes an underground route through the counter-mine galleries of the Mezzaluna del Soccorso.

The Mole Antonelliana was originally designed as a synagogue. It can be climbed on foot via the stairs inside the dome to the panoramic terrace. The Teatro Regio also looks back on a long history: it opened on 26 December 1740 with Francesco Feo’s opera Arsace. The present-day Teatro Regio building opened on 10 April 1973 with Giuseppe Verdi’s opera I Vespri siciliani. Tours of the Teatro Regio include the foyer, auditorium, stage, underground rehearsal rooms and the tailoring workshop.

Nature and views

Parco del Valentino lies on the left bank of the Po and faces the hills around Turin. The park offers cycle paths, walking paths and opportunities for sport and relaxation. The Borgo Medievale was also created in the same park as a reconstruction for the Italian General Exhibition of 1884. This place therefore combines paths along the river with an architectural ensemble whose origins go back to a specific 19th-century exhibition project.

The Basilica di Superga houses visitable tombs of the Savoy dynasty in its underground areas. It also offers a viewpoint overlooking Torino and the Alpine arc. Dynastic history and a broad view over the city and mountain landscape therefore stand side by side at this location.

Turin’s gastronomic history

Drinks and chocolate are also linked to specific places and historical dates. The Museo Carpano traces the history of Italian vermouth from 1786, when Benedetto Carpano patented the drink. Tours are offered in Italian and English; tasting experiences are also available by arrangement. Caffè Al Bicerin was founded in 1763 and has preserved its original furnishings. It is associated with the traditional Turin drink Bicerin, which originated there. A visit to Guido Gobino ends with a tasting.
