Muzzano lies on the right bank of the Elvo River. In the Elvo Valley near Muzzano, a wooded narrow section with a small canyon forms a distinctive landscape area.

Churches, art and living traditions

Among the defining cultural landmarks is the Church of the Confraternita del Rosario, built between 1606 and 1619. In the Confraternita del Rosario, a 17th-century fresco depicts the Santuario di Oropa; it bears the year 1632. The Madonna del Rosario is still carried there in a procession on the first Sunday in October. The parish church of Sant’Eusebio is also part of the village’s history: it was rebuilt in the 17th century.

Opposite the Confraternita del Rosario, the town hall houses the exhibition “Antonio Bertola ingegnere militare”. It relates the personality of Antonio Bertola to the local landscape as well as to historic and religious paths and routes. Another cultural focal point is Bagneri, a mountain hamlet within Muzzano at an altitude of around 900 metres. It is home to the Ecomuseo della Civiltà Montanara di Bagneri. The ecomuseum section includes an old carpentry workshop, the former schoolroom, a chestnut room and a hut for drying chestnuts.

Muzzano’s rural landscape has been preserved over time through human labour. The farms around Monte Cuchello express this rural setting particularly clearly. The community in Bagneri also holds an autumn Castagnata. In the 19th century, Bagneri and the nearby Salvine area had between 300 and 400 inhabitants—an indication of the former importance of this mountain region.

Hiking around Bagneri and Monte Cuchello

An easy hike from Muzzano to Bagneri takes in nature, geology, history and local legends. The most frequently used route, C31, starts at the car park above Bagneri at an altitude of around 970 metres. It follows a gravel road open only to authorised users and leads to the huts in the municipality of Muzzano at over 1,250 metres above sea level. The short circular trail around the wooded Monte Cuchello offers views of Biella, Mombarone and the Serra.

Bagneri can be reached via the SP511 between Muzzano and the Santuario di Graglia; the final ten minutes of both routes are covered on foot. Another route from Oropa or San Carlo via the Tracciolino reaches the Salvine alpine pastures and ends approximately 100 metres above the church.

The historic use of the landscape is also still visible. An irrigation canal was used to supply fields and gardens in Graglia and Muzzano with water; in some sections, it still serves this purpose today. This combination of trails, agriculture, churches and mountain scenery gives the choice of accommodation in Muzzano a clear direction: you can focus on peaceful landscapes, visits of cultural and historical interest or a range of hiking experiences.
