Discover Terranova: River Paths and History

Terranova is known for specific routes along the Sesia, a cycling stage, patron saint's celebrations in honour of Saint James and historical evidence at Località Grangia di Gazzo. From the bridge of Terranova and the area around the sports field, routes lead to the confluences of the Marcova and Roggia Stura.

Waterways along the Sesia

The southern stage 5 of the Cammino del Sesia runs from the bridge of Terranova to the confluence of the Sesia and the Po. A section of the southern stage runs close to the Sesia River. 900 metres from the bridge of Terranova, the stage reaches a gravel road closed to cars that leads to Aqvatica Lake. The distance provides a specific reference point for dividing this section of the route. Those planning the route in sections can distinguish the section up to the gravel road from the continuation to Aqvatica Lake.

An excursion route leads from the area around the sports field via the turn-off to Grangia di Gazzo and unpaved paths to the confluences of the Marcova and Roggia Stura with the Sesia. The two confluences lie at the end of this route.

Flat cycling stage through Terranova

The sixth stage of the Castellania–Oropa cycle route runs from Casale Monferrato to Santhià, completely flat along quiet country roads through agricultural settlements on the orographically right bank of the Sesia. The stage passes through the agriculturally oriented village of Terranova and thus runs between Casale Monferrato and Santhià. The sequence of Casale Monferrato, Terranova and Santhià indicates the geographical direction of the cycle route.

Patron saint's festival in honour of Saint James

In the Terranova district, patron saint's celebrations in honour of Saint James take place around 25 July. The secular part of the festival includes dance and food evenings.

War memorial and Grangia di Gazzo

The Terranova war memorial stands at the entrance to the village. The bronze sculpture was created by the Casale-born artist Nino Campese and inaugurated on 7 September 1924. At Località Grangia di Gazzo, Grangia di Gazzo was dependent on the Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria di Lucedio from 1197 onwards. The church of Our Lady at Grangia di Gazzo was rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century and dedicated to the Nativity of Mary.

A ferry between Frassineto and Terranova was one of the historic crossings of the Po.
