Holiday apartment in Ponzone: sacred art, hiking trails and regional specialties
Ponzone combines sacred art, varied trails and regional specialties. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Ponzone, you can plan your stay around these three interests: churches and museums, nature experiences among forests and rocks, and typical local products.
Sacred art and special historical sites
Construction of the Chiesa Parrocchiale in Ponzone began in 1577, and it was consecrated in 1627. It has three naves. Its main altar is Baroque and made of black Bardiglio marble, with inlays of white and yellow marble.
The Museo di arte sacra is housed in the Oratorio del Santo Suffragio. Its collection includes polychrome wooden statues from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its most valuable piece is considered to be a wooden processional chest by Antonio Maria Maragliano, depicting a vision of the Evangelist John on the island of Patmos.
The Santuario della Pieve was built before the year 1000 and largely remodeled, or practically rebuilt, in 1694. Paths and squares around the Santuario lead to a distinctive Way of the Cross on the slope of a hill.
Hiking trails between forest and rock
For trails through the surrounding countryside, there is the Sentiero Cartosio - Ponzone. It passes through cultivated areas and forests and offers panoramic views. The trail reaches the first houses of Ponzone and then continues to the village square.
The Sentiero Piancastagna - Bricco - Pessina - Pianazzi – Moretti can be explored on foot or on horseback and is also suitable for mountain bikes along long sections. The Sentiero Anello dei Gorrei runs through open landscapes with Erica arborea, juniper, downy oak and red rocks; in places, it creates a lunar impression. The Sentiero Anello dei Pianazzi passes through chestnut forests, rocky ridges, meadows and a pine forest. One rocky section can become slippery in bad weather; the trail is suitable for experienced hikers. The Sentiero Anello di Bric Berton is a circular trail through the forests surrounding the Bric Berton hilltop on the border between Piedmont and Liguria.
Remembrance culture and regional products
The Sacrario di Piancastagna was built as a memorial to the Resistance around the grave of partisan commander Domenico Lanza. It commemorates people and episodes from the Resistance between the Acquese and the Ovadese and is the starting point for the hiking trails of I sentieri della Libertà.
Ponzone is a production area for Filetto baciato, a pure pork salami with a distinctive center of salted fillet, which matures at an altitude of 750 m. Local products also include goat's milk cheese.
