Castle and fortress: history on site

Construction of today’s Castello di Casale Monferrato was begun by Giovanni II Paleologo and completed by 1357. After Casale was granted city status in 1474 and became the capital of the Marquisate of Montferrat, the Castello was remodelled and served as the seat of the court. The Cittadella di Casale Monferrato was inaugurated in 1590 as an imposing hexagonal fortress. The Sinagoga di Casale Monferrato was inaugurated in 1595.
