Carpeneto Castle is privately owned, inhabited by the Marchesi di Chiavari-Pallavicini, and not open to public viewing. Its oldest element is a square tower made of stone and brick. The Church of San Giorgio stands approximately on the site of the former parish church, southeast of the castle. The extensive enlargement and renovation work that gave the parish church its present form began in 1719; the enlargement of the choir and the reconstruction of the bell tower were completed in 1727.

Art and Family History

For the Garrone family chapel, Francesco Messina modelled the bronze works in 1964 for its hexagonal porphyry structure. The Pietà of Carpeneto depicts the Madonna with the dead Christ in the central fully sculpted group of figures and clearly refers to Michelangelo’s late works. The Garrone family crypt was commissioned by Edoardo Garrone (1906–1963), founder of the well-known Genoese oil dynasty; the origins of this dynasty lie in Carpeneto. The crypt was designed by the architect Sibilla. It was decorated with the monumental Pietà and five high-reliefs depicting the final Stations of the Cross.

The present-day Palazzo Comunale, modernised over time, probably dates back to a building erected in 1687. This building incorporated several shops on the ground floor and the teacher’s apartment on the first floor.
