The municipal museum network of Alessandria comprises four public and private museum institutions and promotes art, archaeology, natural sciences and the region’s diverse cultural heritage. This provides concrete focal points for planning according to different interests: fortification architecture, historical collections, a planetarium and urban routes between iconic monuments and hidden corners.

Cittadella and the Sale d’Arte

The Cittadella of Alessandria is one of the most magnificent European examples of permanent 18th-century fortification architecture. It can be visited free of charge every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In addition, FAI organizes 30-minute guided tours of the Cittadella on Saturdays and Sundays. This makes it possible to plan a visit to this historic site either at your own pace or as part of a clearly timed guided tour.

The medieval section of the Sale d’Arte contains frescoes from the late 14th century inspired by the stories of King Arthur. The Sale d’Arte also displays significant works and art objects from the collections of Alessandria. Another collection in Palazzo Cuttica displays works and art objects originating predominantly from the Alessandria area. The archaeological collection of Cesare Di Negro Carpani there includes finds from the pre-Roman and Roman periods and is particularly important for reconstructing the state of knowledge about prehistory and ancient history in the Alessandria and Tortona area.

Natural sciences, the planetarium and the starry sky

The Teatro delle Scienze in Alessandria comprises a natural sciences museum, a planetarium and an astronomical laboratory. It also includes a scale model that reconstructs the river landscape of the Alessandria area. The digital projections in the planetarium recreate a starry sky with 6,500 stars. Visitors wishing to combine natural sciences, the regional landscape and astronomy will find correspondingly diverse thematic approaches here.

Everyday history at the Gambarina Museum

The ethnographic museum C’era una Volta is housed in an 18th-century barracks known as Gambarina Vecchia. The Gambarina Museum reconstructs, through thematic domestic and social scenes, key public and private areas of peasant life during the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. The Gambarina Museum’s exhibition space extends over two floors and covers approximately 1,600 square metres. For visitors who wish to explore everyday history through concrete spaces and scenes, this focus offers a different perspective from art collections or fortification architecture.

Visiting hours and routes through the city

For daily planning, the Borsalino Museum provides another fixed point of reference: it is open from Thursday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; last admission is at 5:30 p.m. The Alexalas Initiative Percorsi Urbani presents routes in Alessandria between iconic monuments and hidden corners for tourists and residents.
