Museums offering special insights

The Museo di Scienze della Terra houses around 5,000 exhibits, including rock samples, the Erbario delle Marche and an exhibition on the development of the Earth with information panels. In San Sisto di Piandimeleto, the Museo del Fungo displays more than 200 plaster models depicting the most common mushroom species in the Montefeltro area. The two museums focus on different themes: one on the history of the Earth and collections, the other on an illustrative presentation of the world of fungi.

The Museo di Scienze della Terra can be visited on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays by prior reservation. It is seasonally closed from 1 October to 30 March. For your planning, both the day of the week and the travel period are therefore relevant.

Castles, Churches and Local History

The Abbazia di Santa Maria del Mutino dates back to the 12th century and was already mentioned in a document from 1131. The Castello dei Conti Oliva also tells of changing periods of rule: the Oliva family rebuilt it after Francesco Sforza conquered the complex in 1445. Together, the two sites give Piandimeleto's cultural history a clearly discernible historical depth.

The Church of S. Biagio contains two Gothic tomb slabs belonging to the Conti Oliva, as well as a fresco of the Madonna and Child with Saints dated 1576. The Biblioteca Comunale 'Ubaldiana' dates back to 1956, when Ugo Ubaldi donated his archive and private library to the community. Alongside the stone monuments, this creates a history of collecting and a written tradition.

Mountains and Trails in the Natural Landscape

Several hiking trails begin in San Sisto di Piandimeleto, giving hikers and other visitors access to the Parco regionale del Sasso Simone e Simoncello. In the area of the Sasso Simone e Simoncello Interregional Park, the hiking trail signage is being revised; the area also includes Piandimeleto.

Simoncello is a mountain in the area surrounding Piandimeleto, as are Sasso Simone, Monte Carpegna and Poggio delle Campane. This creates a landscape for trip planning in which geological themes, mountain names and hiking interests come together, without limiting the town to a single activity.

Historical Reenactment in Summer

The Palio dei Conti Oliva takes place at the end of July as a historical reenactment and includes archery competitions.
